There IS a correlation between score and length.

To sum it up, the longer the essay is, the higher the score is. In other words, write MORE
and fill UP both pages if you want to get a 12. It's pretty much proven. People have been doubtful about this for a long time (people don't believe length determines score etc.), but for the SAT essay, it works.

To improve word count:
-Be more specific. Why? The more specific you are, the more words you tend to use.
Example:
"People are smart."
This sentence is too general. We can be much more specific and change the two words "people" and "smart".

Typically, Asian Americans tend to study much more diligently than the average white person due to specific expectations; thus, society stereotypes all Asian Americans as intelligent human beings.

See how we made a 3 word sentence into a much longer sentence. Note that making the sentence longer, makes you just seem naturally smarter.

This is one of the KEY points into improving your essay. YOU HAVE to be specific. By being specific, it makes you smarter, makes you USE key statistics/facts, stops you from generalizing (thus leading to often hypothetical points), and makes your essay longer.

-Prepare for the SAT essay by READING
Expand your example "collection". Taking a history class, reading books (or even sparknotes), and reading the newspaper are all good key ways to improving your example collection. By having these at your disposal, you can easily pull them out during the test and just write, write, write. ETA does NOT penalize you for whichever examples you use. This means, you can use harry potter or even twilight AS LONG as you can connect it to your key point. People who tend to use these examples often don't know what they are talking about because they don't know what other example to use. So read, read, read. The SAT Essay is predictable so you can easily prepare for it. You can also use personal examples.
(I tend to use Fahrenheit 451 on almost all of my essays ^^)

-Grammar/Typo errors will not make the difference between a 11/12 as long as you keep it to a minimum. Typically, those who score in the 11/12 range shouldn't be making these errors..

-Facts don't matter. As stated in the article above, facts DON'T MATTER. So you can bs your way through, but write a legible and somewhat complete essay and still get a 11/12.
However, don't be stupid and challenge the system. They are lenient. The essay is a subjectively graded and this leniency should be taken for granted. Don't just lie. If you make a statistical error, don't think its the end. As long as its not purpose, you should be fine.

-If you are aiming for a score of around 9-12, you SHOULD use about 1-2 examples.
Why? If you use 3 examples, the argument tends to not be developed. By having 1 or 2 solid examples that are developed, makes your essay much more sophisticated. Often, those who use 3 examples use 3 examples because they don't know what to write about for each of the examples. So again, it is important to have your examples at your disposal and be ready to unleash those facts out.
However, if you are even having trouble with getting a score of 5-7, use 3 examples. Just focus on a repetitive style, and develop your writing. Then, after consistently getting a score of 7-8, start moving onto 1-2 examples. Taking your time is the key.

-Write everyday about ANYTHING by HAND.
I do not stress this enough. By writing with your hand, you develop "hand strength" and allows you to write faster. Also, by writing everyday about anything simply forces you to think while you write. Have a 15-25 minute drill everyday. Keep a diary. Writing more makes you write better.

-Practice, practice, practice!
Enough said.

Note:
I made this on the fly. I just felt like making this short guide out of the blue and I hope it does help people out there plus verify some facts. I used everything in this guide to help me receive my consistent essay score of 10-12. Although my multiple choice score isn't excellent, my essay score is. Nonetheless, I did not cover everything when it comes to the essay, but I covered the basics, the essentials. So... Good luck!

I got a 7 on my essay my 1st time.

I used 3 examples, and I seriously had no idea what I was talking about.

Thanks for the guide!

Thanks a lot for sharing this helpful information!

np, hope it all works out for you guys.
