I am a high school junior. NYU is my DREAM SCHOOL. I live in Massachusetts. I am a Chinese Male. I am the first to go to college in my family.

GPA: 3.33 (UW) 7.6 (W) (my school is out of 9 and really awkward.)

SAT: N/A, (What should I want to achieve?)

EC's:

Uplift (9)
Head volunteer at a summer program. Lead a class of 26 students. I volunteered for 86 hours.

Asian Culture Club (Member 9-10 Secretary 11)

Youth Leadership Academy (10)
We learned leadership skills throughout my sophomore year. At the end of Summer '08 we went to El Salvador to demonstrate these skills. We built a wall and got to learn so much about the people there.

Diocesan Youth Council (11 - 12)
30 youth are chosen out of The Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. From each deanery 1 youth is selected to vote at Diocesan Convention where we vote on issues within the church, and we vote on how our funds are spent. My senior year, I will be the delegate for the Boston Harbor Deanery. We plan retreats for the other youth in the diocese. It's really cool and lets me use the skills I acquired in Youth Leadership Academy.

School-life:

I take 3 languages. I speak 5 languages. At home, I speak Cantonese and Mandarin with my mom and dad. I did not know how to write in Chinese. At school, I take A.P French, Honors Chinese and Spanish year 2. This is my first year of Spanish, but I was allowed to skip year one because I demonstrated that I could excel in year 2.

I am a photography student and I LOVE IT. I LOVE IT. I LOVE IT. I always look forward to it and it is really rewarding developing my photographs.

I am utterly average at everything else. I plan on taking my SAT subject tests in:
Chinese
French
Spanish
and Biology.

What can I do to make me more appealing to NYU?

What school within NYU will you apply to? Stern requires SAT II's in Math, so make sure you meet all the requirements for the school you are applying to.

Hey Will, you seem to fill right into the NYU mold. When I talked to the admissions officer during a visit, she said they like well rounded worldly students. The fact that you speak/know 5 languages is a huge plus (potential hook), and the fact that you'd be the first in your family to go to college is a huge plus. Academically ---see if you can push that 3.3 to a 3.5 this year if possible (I know it's not as easy as i make it sound).

I mean you're on the right track. Would you want to major in photography in college? If so, you'd go to Tisch. Whatever you decide to do whether it's photography or something else, devote yourself to that. They like to see passion over at NYU.

Aside from that I think you got the idea. Maybe take a trip to China or intern with a newspaper doing photography for the summer. Of course take the SAT's and perhaps ACT's.

GPA might be a bit low for Stern, and okay for other NYU schools. It would be great if you push it up a bit. keep the same clubs and interests and you're be fine. 5 languages is a good thing. you might be interested in their study aboard locations.

I really want to get into Stern.
Let's say I stayed at 3.33, and I wanted to apply ED.
Would it be better for me to wait for regular decision and try and bring up my grades with my senior year grades?

What are my chances that the 5 languages will be my hook?

Don't take Chinese SAT IIs, do one of your other languages instead. NYU doesn't like language SAT IIs from native speakers because it doesn't tell them anything new about you.

The SAT score I listed above is for math and verbal, only.

Your GPA is very low for Stern. That is not good.

If you're determined to apply, you absolutely must do well on the SAT. I'd say 700+ on every single section of the SAT I and II is necessary for you to have a shot.

Most Chinese Americans can't write in Chinese, that's pretty normal but you're still considered a native speaker. They'll assume that you are by your name anyway.

I'm just saying, an SAT II in Spanish or French looks a lot better for you than an SAT II in Chinese.
