Shot at Princeton...South African**

Hey, please would you tell me what my chances are or just give me some advice about getting into Brown or any other of the Ivies for that matter

BIO:
-Male
-Caucasian
-South African
-17 Years Old

ACADEMICS:
-I have an 85% Aggregate

-SA Does not have AP, Honours Classes etc. Everyone writes the same exam in their final year.

-I know that SA's curriculum is a little bit harder than that of the USA. I have spoken to my councillor. Therefore my GPA will be let’s say roughly a 3.8.

-I take seven subjects.

Compulsory: English, Life Skills, Afrikaans (We have to take a 2nd language), Mathematics (We have a choice between Maths and Maths Literacy).

Other 3 (We have to choose only 3 more): Physical Science, Dramatic Arts and Accountancy.

-I will be taking the SAT this year.

AWARDS:

-School 'Colours' for Surfing and Academics.

-School 'Half Colours' for Drama.

-Chess (1st Team).

Thanks

My guess: not in.

Until you have your SAT I and three SAT II Subject test scores, it is impossible to predict. Check in again with the scores, and we can give a better opnion. Good luck.

Okay thanks!

Your not with that attitude…if you think SA curriculum is better why don’t you go to a South African University

Did I say it was better? No I didn’t, I said it was just harder.

Thanks Vauve. :)

MarshallMock’s an idiot?

U-S-A U-S-A U-S–mmm no.

You’re South African. That definitely helps. But you’ve got to take SAT IIs so there’s some comparison in curricula difficulty.

ItT definately helps that I am South African??

Your application from South Africa will be unique. However, you will be catagorized with the other international applicants who are generally very competitive, so admission becomes more difficult. Take time to prepare for your testing, give care and attention to your essays, and see what happens.

Thanks Fauve :)

Why would I be unique as a South African though? :)

Many top colleges in the US like to boast in their admissions catalogues and profiles that the student body is made up of students from 50 states and xx number of countries. It is the age of geographical diversity as well as ethnic diversity.

Oh, that does make sense hey. Do you know if there are many South Africans situated at any Ivies? :)

I know of a few at Harvard, do not know about Princeton. The geographical tip is not overly huge though, so be sure to put your energy on prepping for all the SAT I & II tests, because the international pool of applicants usually have very high scores.

Okay Thanks  “The geographical tip is not overly huge though” So there is one at least?

Yes, there are many types of “tips”, geography being one. In the vocabulary of admissions, they are helpful but not as powerful as a “hook” (like being an Olympian, or national math winner, etc.)

What are some other examples of hooks?? :)

Being a published author, an inventor with known patents,a legacy (a parent attended Princeton as an undergrad), a celebrity (Emma Watson, Brown '13), a child of a celebrity, development case (your parents want to give $10 million for a new building, etc. You can use the search function on this thread to find answers to such questions. (Just type in “hook”, and choose individual posts.)

emma watson seems to be as smart as the girl she played in the movie harry potter.
who cares shes hot anyway.
