Shotgun(ning)

In the spirit of curiosity, I just want to know your opinion as to "shotgun(ning)", which is to say, applying to a wide swath of colleges of which you are a decent (but not hooked or excellent) applicant in the hopes you would get into at least one.

Some of you are probably asking, "Hmmm...like applying to all Ivies or something?" Well, that's probably the best example; after all, how many such applicants can honestly say they have a a good reason to get into those Ivies other than that they're Ivies? I certainly can't, though I'm not applying to that many anyways.

Opinions? Good idea? Bad idea? Waste of money? Depends?

I don’t really see the problem with it if you have the time and money. It just means if you don’t get into your top choice school, you’ll have more to choose from.

Bad idea, because sometimes people think they’re decent, overestimate themselvs, then don’t get into any of the top schools. Add a few safties and the strategy is ok, but it’s still just trying to base your college search off of prestige, and you might end up somewhere that you hate and end up transferring out. Try to pick your colleges because you would be happy there.
