Should a Freshman take a SAT Subject Test in Math II?

Hello.
I am currently a freshman in high school, taking Honors Algebra 2/Trig/Precalculus (My school has a wierd math sequence)
I am interested in taking the SAT Subject Test for Math Level II, but I'm not sure when to take it, as I will be completing all of the math that is going to be tested by the end of this year. My conselor reccommended I take it at the end of my Sophomore year, because most people normally take that test/class in their Junior or Senior year, and colleges may not like a test score obtained in my freshman year. My only problem is that the Sophomore year math course for me will be Calc AB, so I will have gone a year without learning some of the material on the test.

Should I just take the test at the end of this year, wait until the end of my sophomore year, or take it another time?
Any replies would be appreciated, thanks!

Take it when your are ready. A guy in my kid’s school took SAT II Math in 9 grade (he took Cal AB in 9 grade too). He got into Harvard.

You should get the official College Board book with practice tests. It has one test for each SAT subject test. Take the practice test for Math 2 after you have covered Alg 2/Trig and at least some of Precalc. If you get a good score on the practice test, you can probably score well on the real thing. The curve for Math 2 lets you miss several questions and still get an 800.

My son took the SAT Math 2 in June of his freshman year and got an 800. That was after taking the Alg2/Trig class and self-studying parts of Precalc because he was planning to skip to Calc BC sophomore year.

Either/or, I took Math II in fall of senior year and got 800, even though I had Calc AB/BC in sophomore/junior years. Take it when you are most ready.

As early as you are ready and definitely right after you have covered the course material. In your case it sounds like freshman year makes the most sense. I think most professionals will advice you to take SAT Subject tests as you cover the material in school not one year or two years later. To the extent possible, junior year should be focused on SAT and ACT so if you can get subject tests out of the way early, good for you. Students often do very well on the Math II Subject Test, in fact quite a bit better than the Math I test

Alright, thanks. I’m going to look into taking it in June.

First, take practice tests. If you are consistently getting good scores and know most to all the material then I would recommend taking it.

You usually need precalc prep but if your practice tests turn out well, by all means take it.

Ok. I got the Barron’s SAT Math II book, and I am going to review the concepts in the book to see what I do and don’t know.

Double check with where you’re applying. Many schools only take tests from the last 2 years of High School.

@Englshmjr‌ What schools? I’ve never seen a two-year limit.

If that’s true, it is very dissapointing for me because I was hoping to also take the World History and Chemistry tests after taking the AP classes of these subjects in my Sophomore year.
