Should AP/Honors courses be boosted?

My school some reason adds an entire 9% to your grades for Honors and AP courses. So If you had 97%, it changes to 106% in your Report Card. I think they do this just because of a rule a long time ago but never got around to change it.

For me personally, I have 2 classes where I am great in and am able to get 109%, 2 where I range in between 100% and 106%, 1 AP class where I range around 95% and 99%, and then a regular class that I can only get up to 100%, but am around 98% to 99%. I think this inflation of both AP and Honors courses unjustly demands more out of electives that may be harder than an AP/Honor course. For example, right now I am taking an elective that is taught by an AP teacher, so it’s not much easier. My concern isn’t mainly college, mostly on the principle of the matter.

I think these AP/Honors courses should have increased importance to encourage students to take them, but not overly so to where people take them solely for the extra 9%. Even a reduction to 6% for Honors would be better (my Honors courses are the easiest). If they continue a basic percent added on, they should lower it down to 3% and 4%, but I doubt that will occur anytime soon. The problem is when one student is taking 4 to 5 Honors/AP courses vs a full 6 Honors/AP courses, one is basically promised a higher GPA, at least with this reduction, competition will still exist.

I’m sure you’ll get a lot of different answers on this.

Honestly, I don’t think my DD’s high school gives enough of a boost to honors. Her friends in non honors classes have less than an hour of homework each night. Plug in a study hall, and there isn’t much left besides sticking their iPad into the chargers every evening. However, almost all of her honors friends are doing 4-5 hours of homework, and they’ve filled their study hall with a second elective such as band, art, or a computer class. They’re easily doing four times the homework (in addition to delving deeper into the topics and covering more material), and the GPA booster they get is in no way proportional. To be fair, these kids aren’t picking their classes or giving up their study hall for a GPA boost. But still… you can’t do very basic work and expect 95% of the grading privileges of those doing the workload of the honors students.

I know I’m not explaining this well. Every school is going to be different too.

OMG no it should not be boosted like that. I am surprised they even boost it for AP class. At my school, they are very strict with AP classes especially with curves cap. Although, instead of boosting, a weighted GPA would be better

But when those honors kids go to college, they will be prepared for the amount of studying that is needed to succeed.
