Should I apply as a freshman or a transfer?

I graduated from high school this past June in the class of 2011. I decided to attend a smaller local school, mainly due to money. I'm excited to attend this school, but I really want to go out of state and go to a bigger school, with a better program for my major. I am planning on applying to 5 different schools, but my question is do I apply as a freshman student or a transfer? Most of the applications are already out, and it says to apply as a transfer you must have 30 credit hours, or something along those lines. I want to apply as early as possible to aid my chances of scholarships. Do I have to wait and apply later in the year, or do I apply now as a freshman or what? I am really confused about the process!

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me!

How many credits do you have done? Also I think you have to apply as a transfer if you didn’t go straight from high school, usually if you don’t have the credit requirements they require you to send SAT scores and high school transcripts. Which schools are you applying to?

Right now I don’t have any credits, my school starts really late so I don’t start till the end of September. Fall quarter I will be taking 16 credits though if that helps. The schools i currently plan on applying to are Michigan State University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Texas, Northern Arizona University and University of Arizona.

Generally speaking, once you take any sort of college courses after graduating high school, you can no longer apply as a freshman

With all of those schools you are considered a transfer, make sure you check what they need from you.

I looked at all of them because sometimes they have weird requirements for what they consider a transfer and what not.

If you are unhappy with your current option, consider taking the year off, and applying to the places that you are truly interested in.

You need to contact each of the places on your list, and find out what their individual requirements are. Even though you won’t have completed any credits when you begin the application process, under your current plan, you will have completed a full year of coursework at the first college before you enroll at the second one. That will almost certainly make you a transfer applicant.
