I want to major in biology and minor in psychology and then go to med school

I’m applying to Rutgers, University of Connecticut, Boston University, University of Maryland, University of Delaware and Penn State…
Should I apply to American and can someone give me some facts about the school Thanks :)

some people just can’t be helped

Well, that was a snotty answer, and I don’t endorse snotty, but I agree with bk4972’s implication that not much can be done with your post. No one can tell you whether you should or shouldn’t apply to American, since you haven’t given a single reason why you’re considering it. All I can say is that while I’m sure the Biology and Psychology departments are perfectly adequate, they aren’t the areas for which the American is most highly regarded–but that’s something you could easily discover on your own. As for “facts” about American–you really have to do your own research, using the school’s website and several college guides. If, however, you are looking instead for opinions on specific aspects of American, come back and tell us what in particular you want to know.

Only apply to AU if you want to go there, don’t apply just to apply. Personally, I can tell you that I’m applying ED I because I know AU is where I want to spend the next four years of my life. What would help us help you would be not to ask for your “chances.” If you’re not sure whether you want to apply, you should do some research, or schedule a visit or an interview. Though hard sciences aren’t really the strength at AU, still look into it. I would also research George Washington. It’s relatively close to AU (it’s DC so RELATIVELY everything is close) and has a bigger focus on hard sciences :)

I’m not sure what to tell you.

Do you really want honest opinions? It’s hard to give an honest opinion with so little to go on.

Is your 3.8 GPA weighted or unweighted?
-How rigorous a curriculum have you pursued?
-Why should your test scores (very low for American) be ignored ?
-two of my son’s friends who graduated last spring are now in med school, so obviously students can go to med school from American–

but

why are you interested in applying to American? American’s admissions office favors those who have expressed particular interest in attending there, and we can’t tell why you are interested in applying. It is an outlier from the list of schools you are applying to. Actually, it seems to me that a lot of the schools you are applying to will be significant reaches for you with that test score, even assuming you are in-state for one of them.

by the way–while sciences are not American’s area of biggest strength, they are strong enough, which is what matters for med school admissions. And as the majors are very small, there isn’t a lot of competition amongst the students. It is easy to develop strong relations with the professors, leading to good opportunities and good LORs.

Sometimes it is a good strategy to go to a school where not everyone else is a pre-med. Easier to stand out. Much less competition. Much less of a weed-out atmosphere.

Just something for pre-meds to think about.
