Should I apply to LSA or the School of Information?

I want to transfer from community college to the School of Information, but I’m not sure if that’s possible. I had a few questions.

  1. I haven’t taken most of the prerequisites for the School of Information, such as SI 106 and SI 110. Will they still let me transfer into the SOI so I can take the prereqs there, or would I have to transfer to LSA --> apply and get into SOI --> take prerequisites?

  2. Can I take classes from LSA (like CS or Psych or Stats) while at the SOI, or am I restricted to SOI classes only?

  3. What does the SOI look for in a student? Would a 3.6 CC GPA with mostly pre-engineering courses, awards in writing contests, and some CS background be sufficient?

You can take any intro programming class equivalent to ENGR 101 or EECS 183 at your community college.

You should apply to as an external transfer for the School of Information
https://www.si.umich.edu/programs/bachelor-science-information/how-apply/transfer-students

This is the first time they are accepting external transfers, so not too many know about it and it will be less competitive.

You can take LSA classes too. It’s probably the most flexible undergraduate degree at UMich since you do not have LSA distribution requirements, race&ethnity, upper level writing, and foreign language requirements.

It looks like I’ll only have 45 credits by the time I apply, and the link says I need a minimum of 54. Any advice?
How hard is it to get into the School of Information while in LSA? Do you know the acceptance rate?

Can you just take more credits in the summer at your community college? At this point, its easier to get into UMSI than LSA. You have good chances if you apply while having a GPA over 3.5, do well in the prereqs and essays. I know its quite a bit easier than LSA->Ross which has a internal transfer rate between 32 and 40 %. But UMSI receives less applicants since its new and less prestigious, less resources
