Should I apply?

Early Decision due a month from now and I really want to go to the school, though I haven't visited the campus, but I have heard it is good, and most of my relatives live near there.
I am a resident of California.
Most of the schools I am applying to are in Cal.
This would be obviously my number 1 choice.

GPA: 3.68UW, 4.13 College prep(weighted), Rank: 46/458
Class Rigor: very rigorious, 4 aps Junior and Senior year
Race: Indian (south asian)

Test scores: SAT I 1790 but retaking this week. ACT: 27, but I know I got above a 30, because I just retook it a week ago.
SAT II: Math:760, Chem:640

Extracurriculars: many: Robotics, Mathletes, Ace Mentors, Kickoff mentors, CSF, key club. Tennis-4years

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Do you think I should apply because I don't think I have much difference than most applicants and feel as if I would be rejected.

In addition, would it look better if I had a counselor recommendation when applying?

Your scores and GPA are rather weak for NU. It would be a reach for you.

Why is NU your first choice?

Your stats would not make you an obvious candidate. You would need to be able to show a compelling interest and fit.

You have many fabulous choices in state that many OOS’rs would love to have. There is no harm in going ED unless it prevents you from taking advantage at another ED school in state that might be a better match. (I’m not familiar with the UC school’s ED options).

Good luck.

There isnt any EDs or EAs in California for instates except for Cal Poly.

I want to go to Northwestern for a few reason besides the ones already mentioned:

I love their first engineering program in which you learn about the engineering application of your subjects throughout college rather than in the last couple years.
In addition, it is a private university where you can get to actually meet your professors.

I am still applying for in-states but for northwestern, would i even be considered with my stats? If i get like a 34 on the act would i become a likely canidate? Lastly, if I had a really compelling essay, couldnt that get me in as well?

Your GPA is fairly low, 4 APs is probably not super rigorous, depending on your school, and your SAT/ACT are pretty low for NU. A 34 would give you a chance, but that’s a 7 point increase from last time, so that’s a reach. I’d have safeties, and matches, that you like because NU’s a very high reach.
