I was accepted today into Kelley via petition, and I want to go to Direct Admit Weekend, yet I’m wondering if it is worth it… I’m from New England, so I have never been to IU, and my family was planning on touring the schools that I got into during my spring break, yet judging from other posts, the Direct Admit Weekend sounds exciting, and I’m wondering if it would be better to go to that rather than tour in April. What are your thoughts? If so, any recommendations for lodging?
If I apply to Kelley now and meet all the criteria do I still have to petition
@MKR2365 i would strongly consider going. I have a junior daughter at IU and my son is also a DA for Kelley and we are bringing him for the weekend even though he has seen the campus many times. You will get way more out of that weekend than you would just visiting and doing the normal “tour”. For hotels I would recommend the Biddle at the Memoiral Union (probably full), the Hyatt Place on Kirkwood, or the Springhill Suites (I think it is on Walnut or College). If you go to the DA Day website there are special promo codes with great rates. All 3 of these hotels are really nice.
I am from Indiana and probably went to 4 or 5 visits to IU including DA day. I think DA day was the best of all the visits, but it’s not THAT much better. They had some impressive student speakers, but you are going to get more or less the same information no matter when you go.
If you have to incur significantly more cost to go to DA day vs a regular visit day, I would just go to the regular visit day.
we did a regular visit with an additional Kelley presentation before my D applied. They do a nice job with those visits. But at this point, since you are already admitted to IU and Kelley, I think if you have the option for direct admit day, go to that as you would see campus plus get a close up of Kelley school and program. And get to meet others that would be your peers if you choose to attend.
I would encourage any student who has been accepted at IU Kelley to attend the Direct Admit weekend. Very impressive and well done. Daughter is a F at IU Kelley. Loves IU. We reside Out of State. She can’t wait to get back to campus after Winter Break.
Recommend Springhill Suites on College Ave. Looking for a great restaurant, try Malibu Grill in the Square.
@gopher119 @blackbird881 @Larkin90 @iubaccounting Thank you all so much for the advice. I am trying to convince my mom to take me to what sounds like a very informative and fun weekend!
Malibu Grill sounds new. But your initial trip to Btown would not be complete without a stop at Nicks.
Definitely go to Direct Admit weekend if at all possible. The program is excellent, you can have plenty of time to explore the campus and Bloomington, and really take in IU. I attended with DS two years ago, and meeting people was worthwhile-either from across town or across the country. There were a good number of students from the East Coast. That might make a difference to you…help you figure out the fit. We talked with current students at the Friday night reception, again very worthwhile. Another possible opportunity-do go to the regional scholars receptions if there is one convenient to your location and if that applies to you.
@IL2023 any idea how we find out if there is a regional Scholars event near us?!? My DS is an IU scholar and we received a welcome letter and Dean’s scholarship (not Hutton Honors)…thanks!
^^^ignore, DS received the local Scholars event email.
@Meant2B @IL2023 If I have not yet received an email regarding a Regional Scholars event, is that a bad sign? I received a Dean’s Scholarship, and have heard about people getting invited to a New York area event, yet I have heard nothing. I am from central CT, so does anyone know if I would be invited to one separate from the NY event?
@MKR2365 the email came from the office of scholarships. Maybe try calling them after the holiday break? The NYC event is a brunch on 1/21. Depending on your location in CT maybe there is another closer venue you will receive an invite to?!? Call and ask.
@MKR2365 - I agree with Meant2B - call and ask, and the invite was an email. The reception and breakout sections were very good, and the opps to speak with admissions and faculty were great. We went to the Chicago event.
@IL2023 and @gopher119 I tried to PM each of you but my PMs arent going through, can each of you try PMing me first? We too are OOS and I’m interested in hearing more about your experiences thus far with Kelley and other schools that were in play for your kids. Thanks!
@Meant2B sent you a PM
PM sent
Is it weird that I received the letter that said I received a scholarship from IU and am invited to the NYC Event, but I haven’t gotten any mail or updates about my scholarship? After I received the mail like 1 or 2 ago, I kept refreshing my portal page, but nothing has been updated. Anyone else has this problem?
I am also planning to attend the direct admit day along with my daughter for Feb 9th weekend… Booked the biddle hotel. Planning to be there by Friday afternoon and leave by Saturday evening. Is this time sufficient to get maximum info from this visit since we will be spending lot of money on flights and hotel? should we plan to leave Sunday? Any suggestions. Thanks
@JerseDad IMO, I would try to stay until Sunday. As I understand it, Direct admit will have activities Fri pm and Sat AM. Sat PM would be good to take advantage of the time you are there to really get to know the place on and off campus.
