Should I audit a class before I'm cleared to enroll in it?

I’m currently waiting to clear my prerequisites for a Calculus 2 class at a community college since I took Calculus 1 at a different community college, but since the quarter starts on January 9th, I’m positive the process won’t be completed until weeks after. Should I audit the class while I wait for the prerequisites to be cleared?

Talk to a counselor or the professor of the class.

Most colleges/universities I know of hold the same expectations of someone who is going to audit a class as those who are going to take it for credit as far as prerequisites go.

If you are allowed, what is your purpose in taking calc 2? Because if you audit you won’t get any credit.

I’d also recommend you speaking to the professor of the class to make sure you’re allowed to audit the class - some colleges will not allow this for liability purposes.

Also, if the process won’t be completed until weeks after, you might miss the deadline to add the course. If it’s possible for the professor to add you to the course (via an override of the add policy or some other means), communication beforehand would likely be encouraged.

@batayan calc is pretty standardized across all platforms, so it is slightly odd that it will take weeks to verify compliance. More than slightly odd. Get the syllabi for the calc 1 course and show it to the calc 2 prof. They usually have the authority to override pre-reqs. This long delay over calc 1 does not seem warranted and can hurt you in the long run. Also take the calc 1 syllabi to your advisor. And yes, sit in on calc 2, if possible.

Sure. I think sitting in will benefit you so that you are not behind on the material when you start the class

Get the professor’s permission and sit in on the class. Do all of the homework assigned as though you were actually enrolled. That way if permission clears and you do get a space, you will be completely up to date.

Thanks for the responses, I’m planning on emailing the professor as soon as possible. Thankfully the class still has plenty of spaces open, so hopefully I can see if the professor can override the process or at least give me permission to attend class until I’m able to add it.
