Should I bother?

Hey guys, I was thinking about Duke, but should I even bother? Duke's a pricey app to send in, and if I don't have a shot, I don't want to waste the dinero. Here it goes:

SAT: 800M, 680V (1480)
SAT II: Math IIC 780, Writing 660 (retook writing and two others today)
ACT:31
Rank: 3/150 in Semi-Competitive Catholic H.S.
Classes: 9 Honors, 4 AP's (All A's, 4 A-'s)

EC's:
Volleyball for school (9-12)
All-State (9,10)
All-League (10,11)
Starter in Junior Olympic Open Division (volleyball) (9,10,11)
NHS-Co-Pres (12), Treasurer (11)
Assistant Coach of Girls Varsity team(11,12)
Assistant Coach for grade school (10)
Classical Guitar(9-12)
Tutoring(11,12)
Span Club (11,12)
Chemistry Club (12)
National Merit Commended
First in school AMC (10,11)
Probably around 600 hours volunteering if you count assistant coaching the volleyball teams, 200 without.

Not sure how I would grade essay, I haven't seen anything to compare it to
Haven't seen rec's.

How would my chances be? Worth applying?

-Thanks guys

I think it's worth a shot! Your scores are in the range. Good luck!

I agree with flipchick1127. You definitely have a shot. I would apply. Good luck!

Thanks a lot guys! I will try my luck =)

You show success in volleyball. Hopefully, Duke will see that you continue with what you start. Duke may think that you are a little late with the activities. (Seeing that most of your EC's come in 11th and 12th grade). This is just my opinion, so it prob. does not matter. You stand a very good chance. Good luck with your app!

you are a jerk karyotype! ... look you are fine, you are still over the 25th percentile for sat verbal, and have perfect math scores! good luck with your application, you stand a good chance.

everyone: karyotype does nothing but make negative posts about peoples chances. Go to his profile and read what posts he's made...it's ridiculous. Don't listen to his advice.

that is not being honest, it is just being flat out ridiculous to show off on a message board.. 680verbal with 800 math will never be looked down upon, its still over 90th percentile

I wonder how well karyotype27 has done on all of his/her tests?

don't worry about him

i've looked at his other posts saying "don't even try" and it's apparent that he's doing what many have done before him.

they think that having a board like this to ask chances of people who aren't really qualified to say is pointless, so they just go around saying basically that no one has any chance, trying to point out how ridiculous they all sound.

they always fail to realize that no one really listens to them

Thats a good point. BTW, what are you doing at Duke (I mean major wise, and around campus life)

major wise, i'm not sure. though i'm premed, i'm thinking something humanities based, but i haven't taken any classes in that area quite yet so i'm waiting to decide.

campus life i don't do a whole lot yet. i've found that a lot of freshman are still trying to find their place, and i definitely fall into that category. i am part of a religious group on campus, and i was part of Duke Red Cross but that wasn't for me. next semester i'm going to join a club sport, not sure which one (probably a dorky one though, that's just my style; maybe like table tennis, i just find it so fun for some reason). i'm also doing an internship in duke hospital next semester so i'm excited for that.

well we're completely off topic here, but at least the original poster decided to apply to duke a while back.

That sounds great

I'm looking at probably business, because I doubt I can get into the Engineering school (that thing is super competitive at Duke, right?). I'm planning on marking undecided for Arts & Science college.

business isn't an undergraduate program, you know.
plenty of undergraduates here go into business right out of college here anyways; many, many companies recruit here.
though we have a Markets and Management certificate program, which many people do, don't expect to have an actual business program through Fuqua here or anything.

What do those certificate students usually major in?

Well I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure popular pre-business majors include Economics and Public Policy.
If you want to see Duke's approach to pre-business, you can look at this (pdf file) http://www.aas.duke.edu/trinity/prebusiness/liberal.pdf
