I am very excited to attend Vassar next year! I've heard from CC and College Prowler that it's a good idea to bring a car. I am willing to drive my car out and keep it on campus, but I'm from California, so it would be a six-day road trip... I'm assuming it's not worth it to bring my car, right? I've figured out the costs, and driving my car out (gas and hotels) would be about the same as airfare. Also, my car is RWD, and I am not used to driving in snow, plus IDK about the whole salt thing. Does anyone think it's worth it to have my car on campus? Thanks!

HELLO FELLOW CLASSMATE. EXCITED TO MEET YOU. I’M ALSO FROM SUNNY CALI. So Cal to be more specific.

I’ve always wanted to do a raodtrip across the US, and it seems like a fun experience, but overall the campus should provide more than enough activities/work to keep you busy. It might be useful once in a while but I don’t think you’d make regular use of it, plus the weather there means you’d have to shovel snow and put chains on your tires in the winter, and that’s quite a hassle.

Vassar alum here. Don’t do it as a freshman. You can’t park near the dorms, and the parking lot you can use is at the opposite end of campus. In winter it feels like a VERY long walk. Most students just stay on campus for stuff. The money you save on parking fees and vehicle maintenance will cover your cab fares for the few times you do want to go downtown.

A car might be a good idea if you eventually move to a campus apartment.

Great, thanks so much for the responses!

I’m not sure if chains on tires is legal, I believe the only vehicles that are allowed to have chains are police & emergency vehicles. I know that’s the case here in CT. It may be worth it for @ccunninghamm to call & check.

Renting a Zipcar is an option. Just be sure to reserve in advance. http://www.zipcar.com/vassar/find-cars

@NewHavenCTmom I lived in NY while in middle school and remember helping putting the chains on my dad’s Jeep… but yeah calling and checking is a good idea.
