So Zoosergirl got a couple of mailings from a college to which she applied but hasn't received a decision, inviting her to join things and apply for a scholarship. Both letters started out with "congratulations on your acceptance!" but weren't from the admissions office and weren't acceptance letters in and of themselves. She could qualify for the scholarship, so should I call the college and ask if she was, in fact, accepted?

If it's a college she might want to attend, why doesn't zoosergirl make the call?

DD also got a letter from a Department congratulating her on her acceptance before she had gotten anything from the Admission Dept. I called Admission and just asked when the letter had been sent, implying that perhaps it had gotten misdirected in the mail. They told me it had been mailed the day before and we got it the next day. ( In a way it was nice to be pre-warned because it was a small envelope that could have indicated a rejection, but it did take a little bit out of the thrill of the moment of acceptance. )

So, if she just received the letters you might want to wait a few days.... but then again, what's the harm in calling? I've called schools a couple of times for "business" purposes - DD is not home during business hours to do so herself and I am.

Sorry, I sometimes forget that you don't all know me! For the next few weeks more she leaves at 7:10 am and doesn't return before 10 pm and her school and job don't allow phone calls (except dinner break at work which is after business hours). SHould we just wait a few weeks? Write a letter?

I think you can call for her, and tell them that you are calling because she can't call during the day. They won't rescind her admission for that!

I had to make a couple phone calls for my son to ask questions during the application process--when I explained that he left home by 7:30 and was not home until after 7pm, they certainly didn't act like they minded talking to me instead of him. It's not like they have a 24/7 service.

Ok I called. Spoke to a nice man. She should have received acceptance and notification of $10k per year scholarship offer. He was perplexed as to why she hadn't received, and planned to re-send. Thanks all!

zoosermom, our HS's guidance office allows seniors to make these sort of calls either on their own cell phones or on one of the office phones. I think it is preferrable that she call. But if this is not possible, go ahead and make the call yourself.

oops, didn't read #7.

But other parents out there, see if your Guidance Office allows seniors to make college related calls there and if not, petition the administration to adopt a policy like our hs district. It really is a good think because some students do not have the opportunity to make such calls which the Admissions office is open and it is a good thing for the students to make these calls themselves.

Well, the other thing is that students can of course send questions by email at night, or early in the morning. I am not sure how backed up inboxes get at the colleges but at least an email is coming from the student.

Having said that, I don't think it's the end of the world if a parent calls, providing the call is genuinely necessary, brief, business-like and non-emotional in the event of negative news.

Congratulations to your daughter on her acceptance and scholarship, Zoosermom.

Congratulations to your daughter!

Oh, zooser, CONGRATS to your D!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a wonderful accomplishment!!!!

~b.

Congrats . . . great news. Now do you have to wait almost 10 hours to spill the good news, or will YOU be allowed to call Zoosergirl before tonght?

I sent her a text message. She goes to a Catholic school and the phone will be (and has been) confiscated and a fine charged if it's seen. She's pretty slick about reading text messages though! Thank you all so much for the good wishes, it really means a lot.

That would help a lot. I wonder how many high schools allow this? I'm not sure if my college son's high school did, but I have another son coming up. We'll definitely check on that option if the need arises.

Congrats to zoosergirl!!

Congrats!!!
