So I am a psych major and it wasnt till Sophomore year I found out that foreign language is required (D'OH). My adviser told me that one can CLEP out of Spanish if they believe they can do it.....so my question is..

Should I CLEP out of it? A little history: I graduated HS in 2010 and I took three years of spanish. Took spanish I in 8th grade, spanish II 9th grade, and Spanish III 10th grade. I got B/B in Spanish I, C/B in Spanish II (slacked genuinely but then tried towards the end) and an B/A in spanish III. Those grades are two semesters. I took spanish III my 2007-2008 year.

The thing is at my college, Ive been told numerous times Spanish I is literally basic spanish (learning vocab, past, present tenses) and one could skip right into II if they feel confident. My friends have and told me its a piece of cake. But I want to skip since I dont want to waste a semester of something I dont want to learn. How hard was the CLEP exam? How should I prepare myself? anddd how did you guys do if you tried to clep out of it?

thanks!

Might I suggest that you try a CLEP practice exam for the spanish subject? It is available as a download from their website (for $10). I am not certain if their practice exam will have an audio section (the real exam has two 15-minute audio sections), but it will certainly have a reading section. This would at least give you an idea of whether you have retained the Spanish from your junior high/high school years, at least enough to pass.

You will want to know if your school goes by the ACE-recommended passing score of 50+ for a level 1 (2 semesters of Spanish) and 63+ for a level 2 (4 semesters of Spanish). Realize these are not percentages, but a scaled score. Just to give you an idea, a score of 50 equates to the work of a C student.

I have not taken this exam, so I cannot share with you about the difficulty.

thank you. any information is helpful information.

I’m not sure if you already took the spanish clep but I’ll post my experience. If you did take it let us know how you did.

I took 4 years of spanish in high school. I got A’s and really enjoyed the language. I took the AP spanish test in high school and got a 3

After high school I joined the Navy. I didn’t use any spanish for two years aside from talking to a puerto rican friend a little bit off and on. I decided to take the CLEP. I scored a 58, which is passing and will get me college credit at many schools.

Unfortunately, my college only gives credit for spanish with an AP test score of 4 or higher. They don’t accept CLEPs. I just started this year(8 years after graduating high school), and I had to take their placement test. I was able to test into a 3rd year spanish class, and if I pass it with a C or higher they’ll give me 4 semesters of back credits for spanish language.

I would definitely recommend trying to CLEP out of it. If you still have your old high school notes that would be a good review. Try to find some podcasts online and listen to spanish a little each day. There is an audio part of the test.
