Should I Consider NCSU?

Hello there! I am a highschool junior, looking to apply early decision next year for college. I will be majoring in Biology/Genetics, to eventually get a degree in Genetic Counseling. I am VERY nervous about choosing a school, and right now i am torn as my two target schools are NCSU, and University of Georgia. I will tell you about myself, just for some background. I am female, and I will be 18 next September. I love English and Theater, and i was positive I was going to be a Theater major, but that's changed. I am religious - i am a Christian. I don't drink and am not interested in the Greek scene. Would I be a good fit for NCSU? I would be coming from out of state - will i have trouble making friends? Also, i would love to hear some things you LOVE about NCSU, and some things you dislike. Thank you for your time!

Hey! So it seems you have a lot of questions about NC State, so I will try to help where I can:)

I think the question should be “Will NC State be a good fit for me?” Here, the university strives to accommodate INDIVIDUALS by providing various opportunities----diverse student organizations, programs that cater to out of state students, various beliefs, and a range of interests (theater); and different types of classes.

NC State’s department of biological science is ranked 3rd nationally among land-grant universities in the National Research Council’s ranking of research doctorate programs in genetics

I am a junior here at NCSU and had that same question when I first came to the university. NC State provides many opportunities to get to know the students on campus: Welcome Back Week, programs put on by the dorms, student organizations’ events, the interactive classes—it is an incredibly friendly campus. But, it comes down to your willingness to get out of your comfort zone and turn to the person next to you and say “hi”. It’s that easy here at State and just one of the many reasons why I love this campus. It truly is a community for the students & faculty and it is always welcoming.

Hope this helps! GO PACK:)))))

I would agree with all that Wolfpacker1887 has said, and would add specifically that there are several Christian student groups and vibrant fellowships at NCSU. But like all Freshman, you have to put your foot forward to meet new people. My daughter is a junior and has found great fellowship amongst her peers on campus, as well as non-students at a local Raleigh church. She, btw, was even younger than you when she stepped on campus, turning 18 her freshman year.

I think you will find NCSU, for the most part, has a very friendly campus vibe and is a little less “stuffy” than some of the neighboring schools.

Also, while there are those who drink, they do so at their own risk if underage. My D had a classmate sophomore year who was “asked” to withdraw by Campus Police for repeated violations.

Hope that helps you get un-nervous!
