I’m a sophomore in High School. I’m taking all Honors classes, and AVID. I’m doing really when in all my classes, probably because I haven’t taken any AP yet. So far, I haven’t seen AVID helping me in anything except my self confidence. All grade that I’ve got comes from my own effort. I’m wondering if I should continue with AVID next year.
We are only allowed to take electives, and AVID had taken one of the spots.
I plan to major in Computer Science, so I plan to take AP CS and another programming or engineering class.
I would appreciate receiving some advice and having knowledge of what AVID 11 and 12 is like.
What is AVID? Why did you take it in the first place?
Make sure you are taking the normal sequence of math courses as well.
Also, what does your Guidance Counselor/AVID teacher/leader think?
AVID is a support program for first gen/lower income students dedicated to helping motivated, gifted kids get into college.
AVID 11-12 will focus on the college application process and would be most useful - see with your GC, if the course seems too easy or not focused on what matters to you (ie., they focus on directionals when you’re interested in the flagship, they don’t help with test prep, don’t discuss Questbridge or Posse or Gates…) is there a process for you to switch into another class?
What classes are you taking this year?
What classes would you be taking next year, with or without AVID?
I’d drop it if I were you - you said it’s not helping you, and you can take an elective to explore your interests instead. If you don’t like a class and it’s not required or an Honors/AP, it’s probably not necessary - you could replace it with something you like better and something that would strengthen your transcript. If you think you need the help through the college app process then take the class, but most schools have some resources available to their students anyway. Do you have a specific class in mind to replace it with, and is it a class you’re excited about taking? If so, then I’d go ahead and drop it. good luck!
