I did tennis last year and was on JV. I'm unsure about whether I should do it again this year. It was very time consuming and I don't know if ill be on varsity this year. I'm very involved in many other extracurriculars and I am in rigorous courses. Should I quit doing tennis?

Bump …

Hey Im in the same situation as you. Im a junior, not ranked in tennis at all and im a junior. I was on jv the past few years where my team has won city twice in a row and this year i got onto varsity after working my butt off all summer. Then i played bad for 1 week and my stupid coach booted me down to jv again. he kept saying its not permanent but it obviously is. And so, yeah. Im like you. Ill tell you this.

Do it. Dont quit. People say never do sports just for college and i mean it dont do it just for college, but we do. Youre on the team in tennis for college, nobody in tennis likes really being on a team, its an “independent” or “all about me” sport. Do it, you get better and if you guys do well that still goes on your app anyways. Also i personally think sports arent great on your app, but they don’t hurt and as long as the team doesnt hurt your grades, do it!

It build character and helps colleges put you in perspective.

If you don’t do tennis, do another sport.

I’m just worried that it will be too time consuming. It’s not because I think it’ll look bad for college or because it will look good for college. I’m worried that it’ll take time away from academics, extracurriculars, and volunteering.

I’m going to say something different from everyone else. Sports are time consuming. If you’re good enough college coaches might specifically take an interest in you (which depends entirely on your skill level and the colleges you’re applying to), or if you truly enjoy the sport, I’d recommend doing it again.

The fact that you even asked this question, though, shows that you don’t really enjoy tennis, or that you value your other extracurriculars and your grades more than a sport you’ve done a year of JV in, which is perfectly reasonable and understandable. Think about the time you’d have to dedicate to tennis - how much work could you get done for your classes in that time? How much more dedicated could you be to our other ECs? How much more studying could you get done? How much more sleep could you get? If you think the answers to those questions justify quitting, then don’t do it.

If you really feel like tennis is eating up your time and not at all enjoyable, then drop it. Don’t do something for college that you wouldn’t do not for college otherwise. If tennis will bring down your grades and make you miserable, it’s not worth it in the long run.
