I’m currently a freshman at a school with a very large and strong NJROTC program. I plan to join the Unarmed Exhibition team, which is one of the strongest teams there (they regularly take 1st/2nd place titles at the national competition). I know that doing NJROTC will take up a lot of time, and the school is known to have a very heavy workload as well. I also plan to join one or two other clubs. My questions are:
- Is it worth it to do NJROTC? How was your experience?
- How good of an EC is doing NJROTC when applying to colleges?
- Will I be able to be involved in NJROTC, do lots of homework, and be in one or two other clubs at the same time?
The biggest benefits would be in applying for ROTC scholarships or military academies. Otherwise, colleges don’t care exactly what activity you commit yourself to, as long as you have a high level of engagement in whatever it is.
Thanks for the advice. I forgot to mention, I’m not interested in joining the military. Almost all of the people in the program (at my school at least) aren’t going to join the military, they just do it for the experience.
Is your JRTOC a class or an after school activity? Because it can really impact your GPA if its a class. The one at my school was my only non honors class last year, and it dropped my GPA below many of my competitors.
@Otter517 It’s a class that you take instead of PE. I wasn’t aware that it could impact your GPA so much, what happened in your class?
In my school, we don’t have any non honors (even PE, which is really stupid), so I had to go to another school for it. It lowered my GPA because of that. Unless you have ‘honors gym’ I really don’t think it would impact you that much. Its fun class, too, and you learn real life things that they don’t mention in other classes.
@Otter517 Haha I see. Well, I decided to drop the class after all, since it seems like too much of a time drain. Thanks for your advice though!
