I'm currently a freshman and I'm taking chemistry. I have an A and I like Chemistry so it's not bad. So next year I originally wanted to do AP Biology, but the counselor recommended against it. She says every year only about 2 students get As in that class out of all the classes the AP Bio teacher has, and of those people took Pre-AP Biology already. So as you can see the counselor is trying to scare me away from taking it. But I REALLY don't want to do Pre-AP Biology, mostly because I'm scared my class rank is gonna fall since it's not weighted. So I now I'm thinking...why don't I just do AP Chemistry? The problem is I'm still gonna end up doing AP Biology later (probably 11th grade), so should I just get it over with now?

Which is easier, AP Chemistry or AP Biology? Keep in mind I've taken regular chemistry already.

I guess if you can double up on sciences, take both pre-AP Bio and AP Chem?

TBH AP Bio shouldn’t be that bad, at least in comparison to AP Chem – afaik lots of kids take the class without taking a normal bio / preparation class in advance and succeed regardless. I think a lot of it depends on your school though, regarding both your school’s students and the individual teachers/classes. (Either your class is very hard or the kids taking it aren’t as motivated as they could be)

@shinchang No space in my schedule for doubling up!

That sucks Well it’s totally up to you, but I’d think I’d personally recommend taking AP Chem if you haven’t already taken any normal bio classes. You’re just going to continue to forget everything you learned in chemistry, and if you’re going to take AP Chem in the future anyway, it might be best to take it as soon as possible.

Take pre-AP Bio or AP Chem. Don’t take AP Bio without having pre-AP Bio

@skieurope But I’m going to eventually take AP Bio so won’t I eventually have to take pre-AP Bio? Or do you think I could take AP Bio junior year without taking Pre-AP Bio?

Don’t ever take AP Bio without having pre-AP Bio regardless of year. As for the whole weighted GPA, this is a non-issue as every HS weights differently. Colleges will either look at unweighted or will recalculate GPA to their standard. Once you get into college, nobody will ever care what your class rank was.

@skieurope But they WILL look at class rank, won’t they??? Or percentage? I wish I had one more space. Then this decision would be easy, AP Chem and Pre-AP Bio. If only I didn’t have to do PE…

Can you take pre AP bio over the summer?

Fewer than half of US HS students are ranked anymore. The college AO will look to see how you compare to others from your school, yes. But once you are in the top 10%, they are looking at other things that make you “you” and determining if you will be a fit for the college. Don’t over-analyze it.

@tigerman333 No it isn’t offered at my school.
@skieurope Well that’s reassuring. I guess it won’t be the end of the world if I slip a little in class rank. Plus I’m taking all weighted classes in 11th grade so that should help move me up a little.

AP Bio and AP Chem are really easy. You should be fine with either one.

Ignore the ■■■■■ ^

You don’t need pre-AP biology. Don’t take it unless you’re forced.

Kawa, AP Bio and AP Chem are easy. AP Bio is pure memory, AP Chem is arithmetic, don’t even need calculus.

@rosie19

I was referencing to the Indian thread

@rosie19 I don’t know if you’re joking or not, but AP Chem is actually kinda hard. AP Bio is all memorization but AP Chem is on a different level.

The OP has already taken one year of chem so it shouldn’t be hard at all and it’s the only chem she can take.

Agh so much conflicting information! @rosie19 Have you taken any of these classes? What was your experience?

I have taken these classes and as I said they are easy. The only class I found hard is AP Physics C E&M for which you need AP Calculus BC. If you are concerned then you should avoid them.
