I'm in tenth grade right now, and I relaly want t o get into Stanford. Currently, I play tennis. I've been playing tennis ever since 9th grade on the JV team. This year, I've sort of slacked off and I didn't really try. I'm worried that may affect my app to Stanford. Shouild I work really hard to get into Varsity or should I just not waste my time?

I've been told Stanford likes kids who play varsity sports. Does Stanford want varsity sports?

BTW, I'm not sports oriented. I'm a normal kid that loves science, etc, but really wants to get into Stanford.

Stanford has a highly competitive tennis team, often ranking in the top 10 in div I. If you are one of the rare few who plays well enough to make a good contribution to the Stanford team, it may make a big impact on your application. However, if you instead only play tennis okay and don’t have much impact on your HS team, it will be treated more like just another EC. It would probably make have more effect on your admission, if you focused your ECs on something you are truly passionate about where you can do exceptionally well and make a bigger impact on the team/group.

Do what makes you happy.

I was on JV Cross Country all four years and I got in. One extracurricular, unless you have the potential to be a recruit, I doubt will affect your application to an extreme/make it or break it.

Getting a leg up in admissions is a horrible reason to try to make varsity. If you think it’d be a waste of your time then find better ways to spend it.
