I have a lot of history credits from AP classes but I’d like to study business or economics. Should I try and double major in history and business/economics. I’ve always been a very good history student and have always been strongly enjoyed it and I don’t think it would be too much of a stretch for me to do both. I also hope to attend law school and I feel as though a double major would help me stand out.
Reasons to double major: you have a genuine interest in both subjects; both subjects are closely tied together (eg, physics & math)
Reasons NOT to double major: doing it to impress somebody else (it won’t impress law schools); risk of a lower GPA (which law schools will care about- they look at the top line, not the fact that you double majored); you don’t love the subject enough to take all the major requirements
Facts to consider: 1) at most colleges, it won’t be relevant to the decision process for admissions; 2) you may have all of the AP history courses, and your college may give you credits toward graduation for them, but many (most?) colleges won’t give you credits towards completeing the major for them.
tl;dr: wait until you actually get to college to make that decision, and ONLY do it if you are really interested in doing both subjects. If you stay law-school focused, protect your GPA- it will matter more.
Thanks for the advice. I think I’ll just wait until I get to school. And I have a very strong passion for both so I guess I’ll just have to see.
