Hello, first I would like to say that I’m not sure this was the right place to post this. I’m new to this website and still navigating. Anyway, I am currently a Music Education major in my first semester of college. One thing that is currently terrifying me is the job market, there doesn’t seem to be a very high demand for music teachers here in Iowa. I am doing somethings to make me more competitive in the job market such as getting my coaching endorsement, considering getting my masters, etc. But I was wondering if it would be worth it to double major in another education subject such as history as something to fall back on. Or is that even possible? Thanks!
Whether or not it’s possible is something you have to talk to your school about. At some schools, it might be doable, and at others it wouldn’t be. Talk to your advisors.
It’s always good to think about back-up plans and how you might hedge your bets a little bit against a tough job market.
Only double major if you can’t see yourself studying only one of those things.
It’s late in the game but I suggest you go to the music major forum with this, here on CC. It can be hard to double major with this combination- it depends on the school. I think you will be fine with the music education alone, whether you get a job in that field right away or not. Make sure to do some internships or volunteer.
