Hello, im a first year student at my cal community college, and im 1 week into my financial accounting class and I have no clue what its really about. Like the professor started talking about all these terms that I have never heard before like equity and liquify and what not. Ive never taken a business related class besides high school economics. Should I drop this financial accounting class? I really need the credits to transfer! Help!
Do you plan on taking a business related major? If so, keep the class (unless the schools you would like to transfer to require you taking it there). Also, there are many online resources that will help. Google “accounting vocabulary” or something like that. I’ve seen lists of words with definitions that do a nice job of explaining things. It is like taking a different language as many words would be foreign without any basic knowledge (revenue, depreciation, asset, liability, etc,)
Did you really expect familiarity with all accounting terms in the first week of the semester ? Have you read the assigned readings ? College is for learning. So learn what the terms mean & their significance in financial accounting.
How did you get into that course without pre-reqs. Drop it and take college level micro and macro.
Financial is usually one of two intro accounting courses, with Managerial the other. It’s Intermediate that has prereqs.
I’d recommend the other Intro accounting course prior to Managerial. Is it too late to switch into the other?
If you are going to be in some form of business major, especially a business school or business econ., you will eventually need it.
if you are confused in the class you should not be posting on this forum. You should be talking with the prof, who has office hours every week. Explore with the prof whether you have an adequate background to take the class, and if there are no prerequisites for the class how you might learn what these terms mean. Profs sit in their office every week and nobody ever visits in many cases except to quibble about test grading. You have a golden resource at hand, you ought to use it!
Why do I feel like you’re in my financial accounting class at my CC lol. Because I’m sort of in the same situation as you, but I haven’t yet dedicated any time to study (I know, I’m slacking off. I’ve been giving calc 1 more focus at the moment), but will soon :’).
No, you should not drop this course since you need it, if it is for your major. Have you read the textbook/look up information online? If you have any trouble with anything, you can always ask the professor, or even better, go to tutoring.
Haha im actually a cs major and my mom just told me to take that class just for fun lol
