Should I drop IB Diploma?

Hi everyone, I am currently an IB student and going to be a senior in August. My current courses are:

IB Math HL, IB Physics HL, IB Chemistry HL, IB English SL, IB German Ab. initio and IB Econ SL.

All my other subjects are above a B- except German, which I got a C on it and it hurts my GPA. So I'm thinking of dropping German and IB Diploma. I know colleges want to see most rigorous curriculum so I will take IB History HL instead of German and I will keep TOK. I am very interested in history and I'm sure I can do better on it than on German.

However, I am worried about is that will dropping IB Diploma hurt my chances for college admissions? Even I'm taking 4 HL courses.

Anyone…? Please help!

If you’re still going to be taking that many IB classes and you’re planning on testing for all, could you still be a diploma student? Or can you not test History HL because you’re just now starting…

No I can’t test History HL, I will just take the Year 1 course

If it’s really just German that’s standing in your way, do you think you could get extra help from your teacher in that subject? I think colleges really like to see you continue in a foreign language. What colleges are you looking at and what major are you thinking about? Also, I’m not sure how your school does CAS/EE, but for me we are supposed to be working on that stuff right now. If you have already put in significant effort, you don’t really want to just stop. On the other hand, if you’ve been thinking about dropping the diploma and haven’t done any work on it, you may already be behind.

The simple fact is that for MOST colleges and universities in the US, it does not matter one bit whether or not you complete the full IB. However, it may matter a lot to the colleges and universities on your own application list. As your HS guidance counselor and the IB coordinator at your school about this. They should have a good sense of whether or not completing the full diploma matters for the colleges and universities that you will be applying to.

Top colleges want you to go all or not at all when it comes to IB. If you only go partially, your admissions chances might fail.

All of your HL classes are only halfway done!

You chose a very tough IB course load - HL math, physics and chemistry have a reputation for being quite challenging. Still, I think that you would be better off staying in the full diploma program. If I were you, I would study some German over the summer and find a tutor. You might also talk to your teachers and see what they think your predicted scores for the IB program will be. If you aren’t happy with your predicted scores, then you might have a good reason to quit.

Don’t you neeeeed history for the diploma?

happymomof1, what about the colleges such as BC, William and Mary, UIUC and BU?

Apollo6, I do want to improve my German but I really don’t think I have enough time, I still need to work on my last chance for SAT, college applications and GPA of last semester.

Talk with your counselor about these institutions. It also is OK to contact the places directly and ask the admissions officers.

It is only German, will it be a big deal for college?
