Hi everyone! I am currently enrolled in honors calculus and I am having a pretty hard time in the class. Although I am still passing I feel as if I would do much better in a cp class (level right under honors) where the material is taught at a slower pace. I’ve been accepted into the college of my choice but I am not sure how the college would react if I were to drop the class halfway through the year. I would either like to drop into a business-related or just take the slower-paced class. I currently have 5 math credits which I only need 4 in order to graduate high school and calculus would be my 6th. I am also applying to the entrepreneurship/business management course at the college. If anyone has any thoughts on this matter it would really help. Thank you so much!
Does your high school offer regular (cp) calculus? If so, email the colleges you’ve been admitted to and ask whether switching from calculus honors to calculus regular would be a problem. It shouldn’t be and you’ll be covered for the curriculum change.
More broadly, remember that business majors must take calculus (even if it’s a calculus for business majors class, ie., less in depth and slower paced than calculus for stem majors) so it’d likely resemble more closely honors calculus or even AP calculus AB in depth and pace.
Having a background, however light, in calculus, will certainly help you once in college, especially since the class is often weedout.
If you have already been admitted, ask the college about the proposed change to find out if the college will
- be ok with it (get it in writing)
- reconsider your admission
- rescind your admission
if you make the change. You do not want to surprise the college in the summer with a final transcript that differs from what you told them you were taking.
For colleges that you have not received decisions from yet, if you make the change, inform them of the change so that they can account for it in making the decision.
Most college business majors do require calculus, although it may be an easier calculus-for-business-majors course.
Personally, I wouldn’t make any changes to my courses.
