Should I even try for San Diego state?

Hi I’m a junior in high school and I would love to attend SDSU but my gpa is quite low, csu 3.38 and I haven’t even taken the sat yet but I got like a 1200 with no studying on the psat. So I have around a 3900 right now but if I work for the sat I can raise that between 1200-1300 so between 3900 and 4000. I live in state but in the Bay Area and my last name is Spanish and part of my family is Spanish. I want to major in civil engineering or mechanical. Is it even worth applying for?

And one more thing I forgot to mention, I’m taking a ied class through pltw, does this earn me anything?

You are still a Junior so you have one more semester to try and bump up your GPA along with your test scores.

SDSU is tough with an EI below 4000, but you will never know unless you apply so anything is possible.

Cal States and UC’s do not consider race/ethnicity in their admission decisions. It will come down to your CSU GPA and test scores, your HS course rigor and if you are local vs non-local.

Do your best the rest of your Junior year. Taking a class or two during the summer can also boast your CSU GPA since these will be completed prior to application season.

Just remember that where you go for undergrad will not define you, it is what you do with the opportunities you are given.

There are so many good schools that you could attend, make sure you apply widely and do not focus on just one.

Best of luck.

my friend got in with a 1180 sat so

@Guapo_Trill: What was your friends CSU GPA? Both CSU GPA and test scores are required for the eligibility index so having a lower than average SAT can be made up with a higher than average CSU GPA. Also when did your friend get accepted? The # of applicants continue to rise and so do the requirements so stats that may have gotten an acceptance a few years ago or even last year, may not get them in this year.

Also local vs non-local can make a difference.

Everything depends upon how you compare to your fellow prospective students in your intended major.

as a non-local applicant, you need an EI around 4100 to be comfortable at SDSU - and some majors are even more selective. You aren’t totally out of range so, it isn’t wasted money. You also have time to improve your chances with strong grades this semester and a re-take of the SAT. If you really want to attend, do what you can on both fronts. It really is within your grasp.

good luck.
