I deciding between Johns Hopkins and a 6yr Pharmacy program nearby.
I don't get my financial aid information until April 28th for Johns Hopkins.
I already like what I see and hear (did a lot of research). Do you think I should even visit on April 28th?
Also, I hear that the dorming situation gets complicated (people get rejected and have to find an apartment in the horrible surroundings) for sophomores and upperclassmen?!

I am pretty sure that all sophomore have housing. people don't start looking for apt.s until junior year, while some still live in campus housing. but, the surroundings aren't horrible--in fact they can be quite nice and they are almost always much cheaper.

Horrible surroundings? I think you should visit.

Woah. I'm quite surprised to find that you heard such nasty rumors. The rumors about students not getting university housing are not true. University has just completed Charles Commons in the Fall of 2006 and is a brand new mega dorm that they just completed with capacity to hold 600 students. Very new and impressive. I'm living there next year.

Charles Commons

I believe Hopkins guaranteeds housing up until your junior year. In fact, I can attest to the fact that the University owned apartments in the short vincinity outside of campus is a lot more luxurious and spacious than meets the eye. The cost of living off campus is cheap and the area surrounding Johns Hopkins is good. Its a very nice area. The University is essentially an oasis and the surrounding area near the campus is not that bad. Its a residential area that is safe and beautiful.

I recommend that you visit Johns Hopkins and give it a chance before you say no. May I ask what your intended plans are in the future? We can help guide you and give better advice if we knew what your plans were.

Phead128, even if those problems were true, Hopkins is still my first choice. Thanks for clearing this up for me though. As for "horrible surroundings", I was exaggerating and wasn't referring to the campus.
Either way, do you think that its stupid to not visit and still matriculate? Hopkins was my only serious acceptance to a great school and if I get enough Financial Aid on April 28th, then I will most probably enroll.

I was in the same situation as you. Hopkins was the only great school that I got into, I was also accepted into Umass and BU. Umass offered full tuition scholarship and BU offered a $30,000 scholarship. Hopkins offered $10,000 annual Bloomberg scholarship and even then my parents wanted me to go to Umass for college. For me personally, I could not bear working my butt off for the last four years in college and only to have it go to waste and go to a public state college and have my friends laugh at me and stuff.

I cried only to have them say you can go to Hopkins. Hopkins was my first choice too. Please don't let the financial aid situation get the best of you. My family could have afford it but only at a great cost to them, but then again, it is manageable and we can pay for it. I wouldn't have given up anything to go to my dream school and would have just simply died if I spent my next four years of my life at another school.

I have some student friends from other countries that simply got into Hopkins without ever seeing the place. They were somewhat shocked to see such a beautiful campus. Most people who visit would be impressed at the beauty of the campus, federalist geogian style architecture, and the beautiful crafted brick pathways.

I visited when I got accepted and I was sooo shocked to see such beautiful buildings and really well manicured grass. i'm talking beautiful grass. I highly recommend visiting and coming over for open house. you have the option of rooming with a freshman or sophmore in one of the dorms and get insider advice on how life is at Hopkins. Its a great experience. I lived in Charles Commons for one day with another prefrosh in a sophmore's dorm. He let me use his bed while my dad slept over at a hotel nearby.

Good luck and Hope you get a suitable financial aid package foryou and your family!
