I personally prefer the comfort and reliability of a desktop but if the mobility of laptops are really important to have, i'll reconsider.

question for current GT students: About what percentage of the students own laptops? If you own one, how useful is it???

I personally prefer the laptop, but as always, it's up to you. Almost everyone I know owns a laptop and of those who own desktops, save for a handful, own a laptop as well.

GT requires you to have a computer (desktop or laptop), is requiring CS and CM majors to have a laptop this coming year, and next year all students will be required to have a laptop. So if money is an issue a laptop would be your best bet, because if you get a desktop this year you'd need a laptop next year anyways.

Laptop, for sure. My son thought he wanted a desktop, but finally went with a laptop. He is soooo glad he did. Now he can bring it back and forth on the plane for school breaks and take it to friends' rooms to study.

thanks for all of your input. it looks like i'll be going with a laptop.
