Alright, I just finished my associates degree in business last week at my community college. A few months ago I learned that someone can get a second associates degree, associates of arts to be specific with just 16 additional credit hours not applied to their first degree. Since my credits are already over a little bit, I only need to get 12 more credit hours to get the second associates. Please do not say I should just continue on to my bachelors at a university, this is not currently an option due to not having the money for it and not being 100% sure on what I would even do for a major at this point. I am planning to work for a couple of years to get an idea of what I might want as an actual career and then transferring to the university once I have money saved up. My main question here is if getting the second associates degree is worth the time since it will only take one semester to complete it or if having a second associates wouldn’t matter at all in the long run. Thanks in advance.
imo? no, especially as you have no purpose for it.
Alright thanks, the only reason I was thinking about it would be if my idea of what I want to do changes and I want to do something more in that line of work and it may make transferring to a university in that area easier.
If you’re changing from a history major to a physics major or a gender studies major to a math major or something like that, then there may be some merit to getting a second associates. Obviously a history major isn’t likely to take the required science and math courses of a physics major during their fresh/soph years. Such a change would likely require more than a semester though, depending on how much of the material that student had seen previously.
In the vast majority of cases though, there is really no point to getting a second associates aside from the situation outlined above. If one were to major in chemistry in CC and later switch to physics, they aren’t likely to have much trouble transitioning into the different major. It may not even take them any extra time to graduate.
agreed- and the main thing is that you don’t have a goal in mind yet. Get your goal- when you have that, then decide what you need to do to get there. If it is more CC classes, great. If you have what you need already to head to university, great.
Let’s say you graduate with or without this second degree. What kind of job would you get? Would the second associates be helpful to that job? I should think that you might want to save the money you would have spent and put it in the bank for a four year degree and work in the mean time until you save up. Also, if you have no money and your parents have no money, you may be eligible for need-based scholarships!
