Ti-89 is really useful if you know what is going on in your calculus classes but don't want to do the homework, because it solves problems easily but obviously shows no work.

However, despite its many features, it is a little slower than 83 and 84 because you always feel a slight lag time after you press the enter button that doesn't happen with the older models.

Yes. Get in your car, drive to the store, get out, and buy the TI-89. I love mine. It has a steep learning curve, but the journey to mastery only lasts several weeks (sleeping with the 89 will speed up this process). It is so much more efficient than the 83 on higher level math (Calc +). I wouldn't recommend it for anything less, though.

Try solving derivatives and finding the area under a curve with both (83/84 and 89) and see which one you like.

I will be taking calc bc next year and right now i only have a ti-86. Do i need to get an 89 or will the 86 be good enuf? Has anyone here taken bc with an 86?

TI-89 is difficult to use and it's only really useful functions for high school math IMO are its ability to expand and factor polynomials. Not worth the money.
