Should I get a TI89?

My S is taking AP Calculus BC in the senior year. Should I buy him a Ti 89 calculator? He has a Ti 83 now. Thanks.

HELL NO!

TI-89 is NOT user-friendly.

It's meant for engineers, not calculus students.

Stick with TI-83 or TI-84. A TI-83 is just fine.

I had a TI-84+ throughout Calculus AB and BC. Did everything I needed it to do. Many of my friends had TI-83's that did the exact same thing.

depends. are the games any better on an 89? :-p

Actually...the games ARE better.

I love the TI-89 because I love playing around. Not games, I don't have any, but just playing around with math out of curiosity. It is faster than the 83 for number crunching in my TI-BASIC programs.

Ti-89T is a beast. If it is allowed in your son's class, go for it.

If it isn't allowed, then look at the HP-50G. It's an excellent calculator that rivals the TI-89T [some would argue that it pwnz the 89T, especially when it comes to power].

i don't know about your school, but at mine, we aren't allowed to use TI-89s

The TI-89 is a great calculator. However, it is not the easiest calculator to get used to. I would suggest buying it though because it is the ultimate resource, and it allows a student to rid themselves of the hassle of solving more simple functions. It only takes a bit of time to get used to if you try, and it is allowed on most major exams.
I would keep the 83 just in case though. I plan on keeping mine for college, but I heard some profs don't let you use them. Basically, it is a great investment, but make sure to store away that 83 in case you need it.

Many fellow AB Calc students were baffled that they were allowed to keep their TI-89s on the AP test. They said it was very easy to store basic functions and what not. I think that any BC student is capable of handling it. RTFM.

TI-89s are MUCH faster and have a LOT more features and functions than the 83/84. My cousin had one for this calculus class. He said that he could have survived without it, but it does help a little. And on the plus side, you can download a James Bond game on it =P

your cousin "could have" survived without it? doesn't that mean it's not worth it? ti 83/84s are much easier to get used and the ti 89s aren't much better anyway

i wouldn't trade my ti89 for anything. for anyone who's said that the 83/4 is pretty much the same thing hasn't even cracked the surface of what the 89 can do. yes, there might be a little learning curve, but it's that hard to figure out.

The TI-89 will become your best friend through AP Calc. It might not be necessary, but it is a big help for the AP Exam. For Free Response Q1, the Area/Volume Question, all you have to do is write out the integral, then plug and chug. It's a big timesaver since you don't have to antidifferentiate by hand. If you can learn how to use it proficiently, it'll be worth it. My school loaned out TI-89's for the entire year, so I didn't have to worry about it, but I'll end up buying one next year for Calc III/IV.

ti-89T pwns all
yesh go get it

you can actually program your ti eight nine to your liking

ppl r turning dumber every day cuz of the use of calculators i was watching r u smarter than 5th grader n these ppl r so fing retarded they can't do simplest math

^^ XDD that show is so dumb
u know those kids dont really answer all those questions
sometimes they have to fake and write down a wrong answer

yes go get it

and if you read the words at the end of the show it says that the kids get a workbook with the answers.

no, get a Voyage 200
