Should I get my parents Involved?

Hi. I am about to get a B for the quarter in AP human geography because of a MOCK exam(Practice Exam). The teacher will not let me do any extra work or assignments for extra credit. With the mock exam my grade is an 85% but without it it would be a 93%. It’s kind of BS that I might get a B because of a practice exam and I have no idea why he graded them.My question is should I get my parents to talk to the teacher about taking the practice exam out of my grade calculation? Thank You!!!

Just curious, what would your parents say? I am a parent, so I am just wondering what would say if my kid were to ask me.

You’re contemplating having your parents ask the teacher to change the scoring of the class because you didn’t do well on a test? Think about what you’re suggesting. Should it be removed for the whole class, or just you, because you didn’t perform as well as you would like? The reason teachers use practice tests, and sometimes count them toward the grade is because they are designed specifically for that class. You’re not “getting” a B, the teachers isn’t “giving” you a B, you EARNED that B.

Why would your parents get involved? You didn’t get an A because you didn’t do well enough in the test. If you were my kid, I would have little sympathy. Do you have a copy of his grading rubric for the year? Is it clear? Why would he give a test he doesn’t grade?

What says a mock exam counts toward the final grade?

I’d only get parents involved if you were being graded on a different basis than the rest of the class and you had tried discussing this with teacher without success. Did the other students know that the exam preparation was being graded? My kids sometimes were graded on whether they completed a take home review packet.

Just take the B and move on. Next time practice more and understand the material. No need for your parents to get involved. Are you going to tell your parents so they can talk to the chemistry professor (who taught Organic chemistry) why you got a C+?

Okay let me give you more information on the issue.

  • First of all I have gotten A’s on every single assignment except the practice test because he NEVER told us it was going to be graded.
  • Second of all on his RUBRIC he said that we would have a minimum of 650 point in the grade book by the end of the quarter but we only have 400 points in the grade book. If he did follow his “Rubric” I would have the grade I truly EARNED which is an A.
  • Third of all it would be sensible for him to give us a test he wouldn’t grade because THE TEST WAS PRACTICE FOR THE NATIONAL AP EXAM.
  • Fourth of all I have talked to him NUMEROUS TIMES about removing it from the whole class because I believed that grading the test was unethical and unfair for students who performed badly because they did not know it was going to be graded but the teacher just told me to go away from his face and ignored me.
  • Fifth of all NOWHERE does it say it counts toward the final grade it just counts for the quarter. BTW MY FINAL GRADE WILL BE AN A but MY QUARTER GRADE WILL BE A B.
  • Thank you all for your responses and helping me with this issue!!! :)))))

Thank you! But why are you talking about chemistry?

My parents would try their best to help me and just ask the teacher why he graded the practice exams.

I’m pretty sure @NASA2014 is just trying to give you an example of what college is like and what you will experience in the future. I’m taking Orgo right now and my professor is absolutely ruthless when it comes to exams. He gives essentially no partial credit and makes the tests extremely hard, but none of us can say anything because we knew what was going to be on the test and we just have to accept the grades we get. You’ll learn pretty quickly that professors won’t even entertain changing a grade unless they made a clear mistake, and that there is no such thing as talking to a professor to get him to take something off your grade.

Thank You!

Send him an email and show him the part of the rubric that says it is not going to be counted - IF that’s what the rubric says. Try your GC first before your parent.

So, what are you saying about this test? It’s a “MOCK exam(Practice Exam)” which means graded or not , it doesnt count toward the grade…

Or it’s a real test, in practice for the AP exam, a real test mocked up to approximate rhe AP exam?

Cuz real is real and can count. Why did you think it wouldnt? Did he specifically mislead? Or some in the class hung on the word “practice” and assumed it wouldn’t count?

And what’s the mania about getting one quarter B? If you want a school like Harvard, you’re going to have to learn a whole lot more about what they expect. In fact, they aren’t looking for the sort of kids who get bent out of shape.

Ok I understand now thanks.

So this is just about the word “mock”?

I just want to say thanks to everyone who wrote on this thread. I understand now and will not get my parents involved. I will work harder next year and not be so stuck-up and up-tight about grades. Thank you!!!

it was its over now. Thank You.

As a point of comparison, my son’s AP classes gave lots of practice tests. All of them were graded.

Ok thank you, i got the answer I needed. I will use this experience as motivation for next year and will continue to work towards my goals and dreams. Once again thank you so much for taking time out of your day to answer my question. Thank You.
