The title basically sums up my question. I know its hard... and it isn't really fair to ask... but I'll ask anyway....

Pro- for going ED
On Friday I went to Skidmore on a tour and an interview and I absolutely LOVED Skidmore! It had everything I was looking for and i felt very comfortable. On my interview, the person how interviewed me seemed like he really cared about me and about what I had to say. He seemed to think of me as a person, rather then just a number, which I really loved. I think if i don't get into Skidmore I'll be crushed.

Con- against ED
So financial issues come into play. Yes my parents make money. My Dad is a psychologist and my mom works for IBM. The issue is that my mom hates her job and we just spent over 100,000 on a new kitchen, so we really don't have that much money on hand. My Mom also believes that going to a Binghamton is just fine and costs a lot less. Plus this school is like 40,000, and opposed to other schools (like Ithaca college, which is about 33,000 plus i applied for a special service scholarship at Ithaca, which could get me an extra 6,000 per year... so going to Ithaca college would mean that my parents would be spending 27,000 per year). Plus if i go ED, that means that the ball isn't in my court. I don't get the chance to stay over at a couple of different schools, and I'm not the one who gets to make the final selection. (plus the fact that Im very indecisive doesn't help)....

Yet if i don't get into Skidmore I know that i'll be crushed, because I REALLY want to go there...

so what do u guys think? just stick to regular and send a really nice note saying that Skidmore is my top choice and that I was very impressed... or go ED, because going ED would greatly improve my chances.

You should only apply ED if your parents agree that they can afford (and will pay) the $40,000 per year. Skidmore tells you right up front that they don't offer any merit scholarships. They only offer need-based, which it sounds like you will not qualify for.

yeah i know. I applied RD, but my counclier said that I do have the option to change over to EDII if i want 2.

Overall I know that I'll have to pay the full price, but do u guys think that I should go EDII, because my chances just aren't good enough if i go rd...?

thats almost frightening. skidmore is by far my top choise and my parents too would much prefer me going to binghamton for financial reasons. we did our kitchen a couple of years ago too haha.

Sorry, but as weird as it is to spend $100,000 on a kitchen, I think you are sort of implying that you can't get a good education at a state school, which I think is just false...

First of all i believe that I can get a great education at a state school... but its just because of my learning issues that I may be better suited for a school, like Skidmore which claims that a class over 30 is a "big class" where as Binghamton considers a class over like 200 a "big class"

okay so no one has really responded to my orginal question... are my chances okay enough to just go rd or would i have a much better chance to go edII?

I took this from the skidmore website:
Those who apply by the January 15 Round II deadline will hear by February 15.
Reading that, I think it is too late to switch over to ED II unless you act immediately because they have probably almost finished making their decisions. Also, if you have any financial issues at all, i would not apply ED II because you are pretty much bound to attend unless you have an exceptional situation.

Our story is very similar to yours. Son had 1375 SAT's private school, but got into Skidmore RD. I can't prove any of this but my best guess is that Skidmore is a fall back school for the kids that can't get into the first tier LAC's. So it leaves the school in a middle ground niche- Especially the fact that we saw little diversity when we attended the admitted students open house. Now I understand why. The Dean explained why and was very sincere that Skidmore attempts to create a diverse class but reality sets in somehow. I believe that Skidmore is an excellent college. It has a nice campus and is located in a super town. Outside of the silly rumors about dope heads and all that, Skidmore has a lot to offer a creative student. In our case with only one wage earner we did not do our homework and Skidmore offered no merit money. So my son is attending a state school and LOVES it! Especially considering that he said to me recently "Greenday will be in concert on our campus, can you believe it Dad?"

His first choice was Skidmore- heck he wore the black "creative thought matters t- shirt all summer last year. So he got into Skidmore, but got a t-shirt. His parents saved some money on tuition and did not go into serious debt (Skidmore is expensive) although we did not get a $100,000 kitchen we obtained a happy son and have extra money for the family and my son to pursue other interests that he has like music ,etc. So if you really love Skidmore and are willing to go into major debt- Apply EDII- If you want to have some options and you dislike debt, apply RD!(although it may be too late???)..I hope this helps?

This is an excerpt from a recent concern regarding someone who is considering Reed College. Replace Reed with Skidmore, and please tell me what you think! I was wondering the same thing.

"The stereotypical Reedie to me sounds a lot like the group at my high school which thinks they're better than everyone else because they've done shrooms, don't match their clothes, and one time read a Jack Kerouac novel. Please tell me that some people at Reed are actually smart, interesting people with hygiene and athleticism, who read On The Road because its a good book, not because their dealer on Haight Street said it 'blew his mind, man'. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for people having different lifestyles, I would just hate to be surrounded by these kind of Pseudo-intellectuals."

That is an odd quote, and it probably does not fully apply to Skidmore because its not as hard-core intellectual like Reed. There are probably people at Skidmore who are like that but there are probably a fair number who are not. I personally have never done shrooms and have never even heard of jack kerouac, although i'm not quite sure if my clothes match all the time. But really the best way to find out the answer to that question is to do an overnight and ask the Skidmore students themselves.

Anyone have any idea what the Skidmore admissions office means by late march?
