This doubt comes as a direct consequence of reading another thread on an NYC college decieving its students about its financial aid offer. I have been accepted to NYU Poly with a 30k scholarship, which seems quite interesting. Without this scholarship, there is no way I can afford it. But I have read in many articles about how NYU is notoriously capricious about their FA. So the question is: Should I still go for it?

What issue from that article bothers you? You do need to know what YOUR total cost of attendance is going to be. As the article says, go to collegedata and look up the particulars. It’s not what a school gives you, but how much you have to pay. Find out what tuition, fees, room/board are and look on the school website for ranges and choices in terms of room costs and meal plans. Plug in what YOU will likely have to pay there. Transportation, supplies, books , miscellanenous are all what YOU need, what you can break down. The kid coming from Seattle will have a whole other transportation cost then if you are a short car or train ride away, for example.

Look at what upperclassmen are getting in terms of aid, and freshmen on the collegedata site and see if there is a big disparity. If there is, it is a flag. Make sure your scholarship is renewable and what the terms for renewal are. Yes, costs will go up each year and most all schools do have students taking care of more of the cost, so there will be that just about everywhere, but anything major is a flag.

Just looked it up, as you said. Seems to be fine, no notable discrepancies. Thanks!
