I am going into business management, at pomona I would take CIS (computer information systems, and at long beach MIS(Management information systems). Both are pretty similar, however right now I cant decide between the two schools.

I will need housing, and I know that pomona is more of a commuter school.

As far as reputation goes though, which is better?

MIS and business administration are 2 different things. I’ve heard CSU LB has better reputation in business while Cal Poly Pomona is better for engineering. Not sure what category CIS falls into.

Eventhough they both fall under business administration, the MIS from CSULB seems to have more tech classes while the CIS from Cal Poly Pomona leans more toward Business Administration(48 credits of marketing, finance courses, etc…). I personally would pick MIS from CSULB because I don’t like those 48 credits of courses that I have to take. Do you lean toward business or tech? Your answer should help you decide which school to pick.

I would lean towards the tech, however I always thought that pomona was considered a more “techy” school. It seems odd that they lean more towards business than the technical side.

My main dilemma has been that I wish to go into management into an industry that is very technology based (As an example, a network or database administrator). Aside from the differences between the two degrees, how would an employer see these two schools?

The specific major may lean more to the less technical side, even if the school as a whole emphasizes technical stuff more.

For someone looking to work in IT, it may be worth supplementing a business-oriented major program with computer science courses in operating systems, networks, and databases, since the base concepts will help you adapt to changing technologies and unusual problems better than someone who has just a user level knowledge or low level certification.

well that sounds like what a CIS or MIS degree actually is usbalumnus, a big chunk of the coursework is specializing in a students desired field of study, ie. networking or programming ect.

Overall though, which school would you recommend

Overall, Cal Poly Pomona has a better reputation in the Los Angeles area. They are known for their hands on lab projects, often directly with industries and future employers.
