Should I Go to Chapel Hill?

I got in OOS EA, but my parents make about $100,000 per year together. I won't be getting a whole lot of financial aid obviously, so if I go to Chapel Hill I'll have to take out student loans and do work-study. My parents want me to go to U. of Florida, Arizona State, or Purdue (all offering full rides).

I'll be doing chemistry-philosophy double major/concentration and then med school. Is Chapel Hill worth the work-study and loans or should I go to Florida and live off my $2,000 stipend?

Have you visited Chapel Hill? It is so awesome! I think if you havent visited, and you do, you'll love it, and decide to go!

If you visit, youll definately decide to go.

Well . . . since you mentioned that you want to go on to med school, be advised that UNC CH has grade deflation. This can make it much harder to move on to grad school. Students study like crazy there to sometimes get a B. In sharp contrast, just down the road at Duke there is grade inflation.

if for some strange reason you don't absolutely love the school, call them tomorrow and tell them you're not going to attend, and open up a space for an OOSer like me who would give anything to graduate a Tar Heel.

I echo the previous poster's sentiment, as I broke down crying when I saw my deferral and would definitely go if admitted.

However, if Chapel Hill is the school for you, then by all means go. (But only if.) Visiting, I think, would be the best way to find that out. And as far as I know, $2000 is a nice chunk of change, but it's nothing extraordinary. But Florida isn't by any means a bad school and if you can save money and that's important, go there. Education is what you decide to make of it anyway, not what the name of the school is.

I think you would be just fine at CH if that's where your heart lies. I'm in the same money situation as you, so maybe I shouldn't be talking, but all the same, just offering my opinion. :)

Wow, I'm in the same boat as you. Got into UNC, but I'm being offered a full tuition scholarship to Baylor (plus some), and may get an all-expenses paid scholarship to University of Texas at Dallas.

I might visit UNC in the spring, but it's kind of far away...

I really like Carolina a lot, and when I visited I liked it even more. I think once you experience the campus and Franklin Street you'll love it. That being said, the thing that really turned me off was the fact that it is 80% in-state, which is the main reason I'm not going to go - but the other 3 schools you mentioned are also heavily in-state so it obviously isnt a huge factor for you. Good luck making your decision.

wildcat- just out of curiosity, why did that turn you off so much? I will admit, when i was first considering attending, I didn't like that. However, just because someone is from NC and goes to UNC doesn't make them 'lesser.' It is still competitive, although much less than OOS. I know several valedictorians from NC high schools that came here. Don't be too quick to judge.

You can't even compare UNC, UT Dallas and Baylor. They are such completely different schools and personalities. Baylor is a VERY conservative Southern Baptist school. UT Dallas was until a few year ago a JC and is still mostly a commuter school with apartments (with many problems) for dorms. It's strength is engineering through a heavy endowment from Texas Instruments. Neither is considered a top tier school like UNC.

UNC gives a lot of merit aid to top OOS students. That info won't be available until mid to late March. You can always contact the UNC Fin Aid office with your offers (after you have heard from them) and try to negotiate.

There is NO comparison between Chapel Hill and Waco.....the most quintessential college town in the US and a small town between Dallas and Austin that requires a trip to one or the other for ANYTHING to do.

We live in Dallas, my son is a sophomore at UNC.

upstater - don't worry, I'm not judging. It's more of the fact that I would be going in as an outsider, in a way, that bothers me. I know the people from NC are smart - I've seen the statistics.

I'm in the exact same situation Daniel. Got in to UNC today and I think I would love it there but I'm from Florida and UF is absolutely FREE. It's not like I would be compromising anything by going to UF but Chapel Hill is Chapel Hill.

I agree with eadad about Baylor. My d also would qualify for full ride plus extra $. But upon visiting the school, we couldn't get over how homogenous the entire experience felt...and Waco, please. We are from a big city, D couldn't handle Waco. Later we found out there is internet restrictions/filters, chapel requirements (which we expected) and there has been accusations of monitored phone calls. Not sure if the last item is true or not, but all of the above was enough for D to cross Baylor off the list. (This is despite the phenomenal new sciences building...the one highlight of our trip.) My husband practically wept at the thought of 100k in scholarship money being tossed away...but it was the right thing to do.

Well, we'll see how much money UNC offers me. My mom says we'll visit it during Spring Break, which I look forward to.

UNC is starting to look more and more attractive, though it is bigger than I wanted. Also, if I do get that scholarship for Dallas, it'll be awfully hard to throw it away. I am looking into engineering (among other things), but actually, that is one reason Dallas isn't that appealing. It doesn't offer that many different engineering majors.

Have you looked at UT-Austin and Colorado School of Mines for engineering?

aww marc....

lady and others-

i wasn't trying to seem bitter with my above post.. Chapel Hill is just my dream school and being deferred was absolutely awful.

I didn't think you were being bitter at all. It's just a shame that the person hasn't decided whether UNC is the school for him/her or not. I went to a UNC recruitment overnight thing and the admission people said that last year not one was admitted from the deferred list. But, I have faith that it will change this year, goodluck on getting in. I know UNC wants more cream-of-the-crop OOS'ers ... it was on the news here recently. So you have a good chance I believe. Once again, goodluck. (= Who knows, maybe I'll see you around next year!

UNC is a great school but there's no way it's work 100k debt over Florida unless your parents are made of money

No One Was Admitted From The Deferred List Last Year?!?!?!?

Whaaaaaaaaaaat?
