At CU Boulder I got into the CMCI program and at Syracuse I got into the communication and rhetoric major, not in Newhouse it is in VPA. I love both schools for different reasons. Syracuse has a better ranking and is nationally known to be a great school, but its winter is scary since I am from Los Angeles. I love CU Boulder because it is in a great location and the program seems to be good but it is known to be a school of partier, i. I am very conflicted of which one to go to. Should I pick bad weather but a good education or great location and average education? I really need some advice!
CU is not average. It is well above average.
Buy a coat and try Syracuse U. It is very strong in communications. CU Boulder has reorganized the College of Journalism into CMCI in 2015. Its newer and less well known for communications. There is nothing scary about cold weather. Learn to make a snow angel, and besides its snowing today in Boulder, April 7th, so you would be getting cold in Boulder too, although we have more sunshine than up state NY.(snow is not sticking today, but last year a big May storm dumped a good six inches on Boulder) Colorado gets considerably colder than Syracuse at night, way below zero in December and January, but daytime temperatures are comfortable here, but we have a long winter in Boulder, with May snow, about every other year. It feels warmer here than Syracuse, as its so dry in the winter. Syracuse feels much colder, but good winter gear is needed in either location.
CU Boulder is a much stronger university overall. CU is placing its students in much better jobs because the economy in Colorado is booming and CU has an exceptional alumni base. CU Boulder is becoming more and more competitive each year too, and it will rival top colleges like UCLA in no time. Companies line up in droves to recruit CU Boulder grads. A friend of mine who is a senior journalism major got into Harvard and Stanford Law schools and another friend I know, who is a Computer Science major, will be making $100k+ at a tech startup in Boulder when he graduates. Another guy I know landed investment banking job offers at Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan, I don’t know which one he will choose. Ultimately, this is your decision but I hope you know all of the facts before deciding.
My daughter is from SoCal as well and got into VAP and the same major as you. We’re going to go look at everything this weekend, it’s definitely a big change from LA! You’ll need a good coat at either school, my daughter is more worried about coming from a big city and will Syracuse seem to small for her? I guess we’ll know more next week. Good luck!
The campus definitely is not city like but it is a nice transition space to go from living at home to living on your own. Syracuse is a school where you must be involved in the campus to enjoy your time there so being kind of a smaller city is a plus because you will want to be involved in campus more. Also Syracuse has a really nice downtown area with a mall.
