I am from Ohio and have been accepted into the Kelley School of Business at Indiana and the Farmer School of Business at Miami. I was also admitted into the honors programs at both universities. Since I am in-state, Miami will cost about $18,000 per year and IU will cost about $34,000 per year as of now, but I am still waiting to hear about some scholarships to IU. My parents have said they can pay for it, but said that I can use the money we save toward grad school. I would like to get my MBA after undergrad from a top school like Northwestern, Chicago, or Penn. I am going to be a business major, but also want to do a double major with either mathematics or computer science. I am going greek for sure, and am worried that the greek life at IU is dying. Is this true? I heard there is a new rule that is ruining their parties. I know I willl be happy at either place, but I can’t decide.
If you want to do grad school Miami would make more sense for a few reasons. Obviously you’d be saving money, but if you were to go to an undergrad business school there’s less of a reason to get your MBA (especially since IU has such good recruiting numbers)
@OhioKid17, I have a son who is a freshman at Miami in the Farmer Business program, and a daughter considering IU in another major. You ask a few questions in your post, so let me comment on what I know, and you might clarify your question a bit to get better information.
Both are good schools. I’ve worked with many people who came out of IU undergrad, and to a person they are well prepared (but we don’t hire the people who aren’t) That being said, in my experience (25 years in consulting) IU produces some good grads, and I would take an IU grad as quickly as any other school.
I haven’t worked with as many Miami grads, just because of school size and geography, but I have been REALLY impressed with what I have seen from the Farmer business program. I think they hare really put some good thought into the structure of the program, and honestly, in comparing notes with parents who have kids at other top schools, I would have my son at Miami without question.
Regarding Greek life, I can’t comment on the Greek life at Indiana - I’m sure others can. My son isn’t rushing at Miami, but he knows plenty of people who are. The Greek system there is strong, although it seems like there are always a half dozen houses in some form of disciplinary action. Research it. One thing that I think is really smart with the Greek program at Miami is that they rush 2nd semester. You have a chance to get yourself established socially and adapt to college life without diving into Fraternity life right away. I think that helps people make a better decision. Also, there is clearly a strong social life if you don’t rush, so you can really pick the path that is right for you.
Ultimately, both are really good schools. In the end, what you get out of the education and how you develop socially is more important than the brand name on the diploma. If you are planning on an MBA from a top flight school, that is an expensive education. $72,000 can go a long way to help pay for that.
Finally, it’s fine to use the chat boards to get opinions, but talk with your parents and make a decision on what is right for you - not what we think.
Are you a direct admit For Kelley?
