I have been accepted to both U Miami and OSU and am having a hard time decide between the two. I am from Cleveland , Ohio and am ready to get away from the cold but am uncertain if the enormous cost that goes along with Miami is worth it. I would be paying somewhere around 45k for Miami whereas only 25k for OSU. The campus at Miami was absolutely beautiful with their student center and whatnot but I certainly did not like the freshman housing. Of course, over at OSU the housing is just as bad, if not worse, but the school is so much cheaper and that has to be taken into consideration. Academically, it sounds as if the two are fairly similar in caliber. Personally, I plan on majoring in either accounting or finance and the two business schools are again comparable. If anyone could provide input as to which way I should lean towards, I would whole heartedly appreciate it. Thanks.
I had to make a similar decision and I chose OSU. I think it comes down to how much debt you think you will be able to handle. There are plenty of people willing go into debt for years to go to their dream school, but it really didn’t seem worth it to me to be in debt for most of my adult life just to have a more enjoyable 4 years in college. I don’t know much about business specifically, but I would agree that the two schools are fairly comparable in a lot of fields. The dorms aren’t going to be great at either school (unless you get lucky with a new dorm), but most freshman dorms are going to be pretty bad anyway. Either way, you are choosing a great school, it is just a matter of how much more you are willing to pay to go to Miami. Good luck with your decision!
@uofmiami2021 No way is UMiami worth $20,000 more per year ($80,000) than Ohio State U. OSU’s Fisher College of Business is much higher ranked #19 versus U of Miami business school #63 in USNews& World Report 2017 edition. People always think the grass is greener elsewhere but that’s not always the case. You are fortunate to have several great undergraduate business schools as a resident of Ohio. Farmer business at Miami of Ohio and UCinncimati (for coops) are two other low cost solid choices for you, but both are not as strong as Fisher. By the way, my son is in Fisher and it has so many great programs to offer for its students. He is really thriving there. And by the way, the Student Union was nicely redone several years ago. Have you checked out the new dorms on North Campus? The new local rec center on north campus or the R-PAC --one of the country’s largest sports recreational center in the country. And you can’t compare the school spirit, division 1 sports teams and Greek life offered by Ohio State compared with U of Miami. Ohio State’s endowment is $3 billion and it shows --why pay $80,000 more when you have a top-ranked world class University right in your own backyard? (I’m from New York and our State University system (SUNY) pales in comparison to the rich out-of-state flagships of Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, etc… so the grass is truly greener out of state for us, but not for you)!
I had a similar situation and decided for OSU. In my case, I’m avoiding loans and saving my parents close to $100k by attending Fisher. For you, should be a no brainer with Fisher also ranked higher than Miami. Save the money for an expensive grad school.
Good luck with the decision. At the end you need to do what is good for YOU!
I have a similar situation: I am deciding between OSU and Rutgers Honors. I live in NJ, so I’m paying in-state tuition, and after scholarships, that amount has been sliced in half. OSU, on the other hand, has offered me no scholarship, but a place in the ACES (Advocates for Communities and Education Scholars) program. I am planning on studying either pre-med or economics (or both). OSU is a better school according to US News (#54 compared to Rutgers at #71), and it also offers more vibrant student life and a better campus. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which way I should go?
