I go to a small private school in suburban Pennsylvania and I have excelled academically and in terms of extra curriculars. I am in the top ten percent of my class and I am the president if student government. I am considering Hamilton and wake at this point and I am unsure about both. I do have a few concerns about wake though, which include its distance from home (10 hours) and the fact that it apparently is hard for Underclassmen to get classes. I'm also worried I will just be a face in the crowd there. I also heard that there is grade deflation an that at wake A's are extremely rare. I want to be able to go to a very good graduate school for law so I feel like that would be a problem. I like that it is warm and that there is obviously a lot of school spirit but can someone tell me what else the school has to offer and how the teachers and programs are? Thank you so much. I need to make my decision soon so any response ASAP would be greatly appreciated.

While Wake might be difficult and grade deflation is more common at Wake then some other schools, it is by no means rare to get an A. Most people I know still manage to get a 3.0 because they are working hard. Wake is well-recognized by law schools and if you work hard, I think you’ll do just fine.

In my opinion, Wake is actually a small school (yes, it’s 2x the size of Hamilton) but every one of my classes has under 30 people and I regularly meet with teachers. Every one of my teachers knows more about me than just my name. I doubt you will feel lost in the crowd here.

As for some other concerns, obviously distance may be an issue for you and is a personal issue. There are direct flights from Philly to Gboro (airport is 30 min from campus)

I really like the size of Wake personally. It’s not too small and not too big. It gives you that university feel and LAC feel at the same time.

Anything specific you want to talk about? Any possible majors?

To be honest, I think underclassmen having trouble getting into the classes they want happens at every school. However, that being said, I think it varies depending on your major. If you’re doing psychology, for instance, yes, it probably will be very difficult getting the classes you want. If you’re doing an obscure major like me (Classics), pfft… yeah, right.

I don’t think you’ll be a face in the crowd. It’s very easy to run into the same people over and over again on campus even without trying, and you’ll hear the same names of people pop up again and again.

As for grades? I think if you’re going out boozing every night and never do your work, they’re pretty hard to pull off, but if you’re in class, pay attention, and study for tests, you won’t have a problem. I wouldn’t worry about it. I got all A’s last semester without doing much.

The distance thing is all a personal decision, so I cannot speak much to that. There isn’t really such a thing as “being just a face in the crowd” at Wake. Since it’s small, you end up knowing lots of people pretty quickly.

I wouldn’t call A’s “extremely rare”. They’re not given out like candy but if you work hard you’ll get them. It also depends what you’re taking – if you’re pre-med or business, A’s are harder to come by, but if you’re doing communications you’ll probably get a bunch of them. I strongly believe it comes down to work ethic, though. Lots of people here go to law school so I feel like it’s not a huge problem.

I know you want to know about teachers/programs – are you looking at a specific area of study? If you let us know we’ll probably be able to answer better :)
