Should I graduate debt free or with 15k?

How have you gone about looking for your people? The lazy way in your intro lecture classes and on your Southeast ‘party’ dorm floor (Sellery or Witte?) hoping they magically recognize a kindred spirit and come to you, or by going to the student org fair at the Kohl Center Sept 8-9 and finding orgs to join, and by living in a learning community dorm such as Chadbourne Residential College (CRC)?

Did you look into the FIGs? (First Year Interest Groups)

Why in the world would a college freshman ask their peers what their ACT score is? Is that like a modern day version of a pick up line or something?

Thanks everyone for the opinions. If money wasn’t an issue, I would have picked Oberlin the first time and never reconsidered. Sadly, money, even this ‘small’ sum of 15k compared to other student debt, is an issue for me. I want to get a masters in International Relations, I want to take unpaid internships, I want to study abroad. I want to do all these things, and all of these things cost money. However, I don’t know my projected income, I don’t know if I’ll have a secure job, and I don’t know where I’ll need to be living in order to pursue my dreams. I am incredibly afraid that this debt will cripple me after college, not allowing me to take internships or move cities to attain a better job. Oberlin spoke to me because of its focus on social justice, as well as the unique student body. I just feel like I’d fit in better at Oberlin, like I could relate to the student body better than I do here.

I have an honest question for the OP. The kids from the northeast that attend UW are bright kids. I personally took my daughter to look there and she has a very high GPA. My only hesitation for UW is that I heard, after the visit, that the northeast kids and the Wisconsin kids really don’t mix. Why would I pay OOS tuition to send my kid to UW to just hang out with the same kids? Has the OP tried mixing with these kids? Is there a snobbery that goes on?

Again. Don’t look back oberlin is a wonderful school but so is U Wisconsin. Every opportunity available at Oberlin is available to you at Wisconsin. Do well and you will be fine

OP, can you answer questions #39 and 40?

To answer #39 + #40: I am in the Honors College, but I live in Witte, which isn’t a LLC.

@educateddarcy I’m going to generalize here, but the northeast kids I know are mainly in sororities/fraternities and are very ‘preppy’. If your kid goes that route, I don’t really think they’ll mix in with the rest of the student body and will instead hang out with other northeast sorority/fraternity kids and preppy Wisconsin kids. If your kid isn’t like that, I really don’t think she’ll have a problem hanging out with WI kids. She’ll probably be drawn to other northeast kids just for comfort, but I think it’ll be very easy for her to make WI friends.

Can you see if you can transfer to Chadbourne, so as to make things a bit easier for you this year at least?
