Should I include crime convictions?

Currently, I am in an ongoing trial and I may be convicted of 2nd degree assault/2 accounts of 4th degree assault. I will probably end up with one conviction of 4th degree which is a misdemeanor. Will West Point check my juvenile records in their admissions process? Should I include this crime information if I am convicted? What should I do if I get the convictions expunged (sealed)?

West Point will ask about this in their personal information section. I do not know what happens if you do/do not get convicted though.

If I do not get convicted then I won’t have to say anything about it. But chances are that I will get convicted of a misdemeanor.

If you do not mention anything and the college finds out (through any means) you will most likely have a rescinded application.

Do you know if West Point has access to juvenile records even after they are sealed?

No idea, but if you have a good explanation about the incident, colleges will appreciate your honesty and they will understand your situation. I’m not sure how it will change though if you are going to a military school.

Service academies require you to have your local police department fill out a form that indicated any legal/criminal actions taken against you, something that civilian colleges do not typically do. Best course of action is to be truthful on any forms you are asked to complete. If information you provide doesn’t match what if provided by the police department, you could risk having your appointment withdrawn. I am not a lawyer so I can’t comment on what does/doesn’t count as legal/criminal actions.

They generally involve misdemeanor or felony charges brought about through a court of law. An example would be assault, a non-example would be a parking ticket

^^^ I agree, the parking ticket thing is no big deal. However, being charged and/or convicted of fighting (assault), DUI, etc. are very serious issues and could have an impact on your ability to get an appointment. I don’t know the answer to the original question about whether or not the exact status of the incident has any bearing on what you need to report.

Thank you guys for the comments. I’m just worried that this fight will hinder my acceptance chances by a large amount :/

It will definitely hinder you. If they put your file against an identical file without any legal issues, guess who will get the slot. They want spotless candidates. Good luck.
