I am taking the SAT my second time this Saturday to attempt to improve my score of 1130. To be fair, I have not given studying for the SAT much time because I have several AP classes which are pretty rigorous and have nightly homework. Tonight, I spent about 3 hours taking a full-length SAT on Khan Academy. I am in a state of defeat right now to see that I have gotten an 1120. I suppose this is my fault, so I am not looking for pity. However, I have heard that students will do much better at either the ACT or the SAT. Would it be a good idea for me to attempt taking the ACT instead of the SAT? I was hoping to shoot for somewhere in the 1200s, but I am beginning to fear that is no longer possible. Let me know what you guys think I should do.
On my PSAT, I got 550 Math and 590 Reading & Writing. (1140)
On my first SAT, I got 550 Math and 580 Reading & Writing. (1130)
On my Practice SAT on KhanAcademy, I got 530 Math and 590 Reading & Writing. (1120)
I am literally getting worse and worse by 10 points each time. What can I do to salvage my situation?
How do I handle workload between AP classes and SAT prep? Should I just forget the SAT and give the ACT a go instead?
It sounds like you’re really busy, but if you can scratch out the time, try the ACT. It’s absolutely true that some kids do better on one or the other. Read up on the ACT first, though, especially the science section.
Khan Academy has some really good stuff on the ACT as well, and if you commit to it, buy the red ACT guidebook. It’s the best one. Good luck!
Thanks for your insight, JenJenJenJen. If anyone else has anything else to give advice on, or tips, it would be greatly appreciated.
If you can find the time I would suggest taking a prep course or getting tutoring for the SAT Test. My oldest D had a few AP classes so we opted for a tutor. She was able to set aside a few hours each week to study. With some effort she was able to pull up her score by 200 points. FYI- our tutor suggested we not jump ship and take ACT as the study prep is very different. Purchase prep workbooks and do practice tests. Please don’t give up! Best of luck
Try the ACT. Some people just do better on one test over the other.
I’d do a timed sample ACT. But honestly, if you don’t have time to devote to the SAT, prepping for the ACT isn’t going to go any better if you have a similar score. If your sample ACT score is in range for your SAT, I’d cut your losses and move on.
If you have some time, I think using a private tutor is much more efficient for prepping.
What is causing you problems on the SAT? If it is timing, the ACT is even more fast-paced and would probably not help. Try taking a practice test to see if it ‘feels’ better.
You should do a diagnostic for the ACT and see how it compares to your SAT scores. My son just did this and it came back that he should concentrate on the ACT. So he did one on one tutoring for the ACT. He is taking it today in school so we’ll know more in a few weeks.
