So I'm an IB student, and a few of my teachers from this year will be carried over to next year. I would like to think these teachers like me (eh..."I would like to think" is the key phrase =P), so I want to ask them for recs next year, along with some of my EC teachers/sponsors.

I likely have the highest grades in their classes (at my school, a 90% and a 100% are, regrettably, both 4.0...I'm about the only one obsessive enough not to just take a low 90s grade), but I don't think these teachers know me too well--or at least, not any more than they know most students.

Should I talk to them after class? Or put in tons of extra effort in my school work? How should I let them get to know me?

Please and thank you. =)

P. S. My apologies if these are often-posted questions...if you could refer me to another thread, that would be nice, too. =]

If you already know who you want to write them, yes, ask them at the end of this year. That way, at the beginning of next year, you’ll be able to give them your forms (and be sure to include a list of activities) as soon as you have your applications. They will appreciate that you were considerate enough of their time that you gave them plenty of it.

I think that the most important thing a student can do to impress teachers is participation in class. Rather than talking to them afterwards and getting to know them in that way, it’s better to be very active in the classroom, take part in discussions and help lead the class in the learning environment. Part of what colleges are looking for is students who “add something” to the classroom- which usually means that they are not quiet, they speak up, pay attention and are fully engaged. If you’re not already doing that, why not start now, and then at the end of the year when you ask for recs, your teachers will “know” you much better.

You don’t have to have the highest grade or even a high grade in their class. I was completely average in my HL History of Americas and my teacher wrote me a strong recommendation; he was enthusiastic. It’s about how much the teacher knows you, dude. Don’t have to have the highest grade, but having one does definitely help so go for it.

Put extra effort into your school work. Show that you’re interested in their class. And I guess talk to them after class if you want to. Also, wave to them in the hallways, haha.
