I'm applying for summer jobs right now--most of my past employment has been at more "academic" type institutions but I cashiered at a grocery store last summer. My parents (ugh) keep telling me I shouldn't put it on my resume because it doesn't add anything to my resume and makes me look like a "slacker".

Thoughts? I'm applying for jobs at law firms/advocacy organizations.

All jobs are noble as long as you put in the effort and earn an honest pay. I will put the cashier job in your resume. It will only help and not hurt.

It would basically be filler, although employers understand not every college job is equally prestigious. Ask yourself, is there something better you can use that space for in your resume? Perhaps expanding your responsibilities for other jobs or elaborating on awards / EC’s ?

A job is a job is a job. Anything that caused you to earn income is worthwhile for potential employers to see. An employer would rather see “cashier” than some artificially inflated title (for example, “Administrative Intern” meaning some unpaid gig where you needed to organize files ten hours a week), since at least as a cashier you were required to do basic arithmetic and engage with customers on a constant basis.

Yes, I would include it for several reasons. It shows humility and you never truly know what skills the employer is looking for - it can be a combination of things, and like the others before me have said, it will help, not hurt you.
