Should I retake my ACT? 35.

<p>I think you should only retake it if you full fill the following conditions:

  1. You are absolutely sure you can get a 36
  2. Your time can’t be spent better focusing on EC’s/Awards(highly unlikely but a few exceptions)
  3. You are aiming for HYPSMC</p>

<p>But none of us can say what adcoms think of an applicant who retakes a 35, so there might be negative consequences, maybe not?</p>

<p>Should you retake it? Only if YOU want to. You won’t need it for admission since you already have an amazing score, but if you want to get the 36, go for it! My son did just that since he was pretty close with a 35, and was thrilled to get a 36. No, he didn’t NEED it either, but he sure felt pretty great about the accomplishment. Also, I think he would’ve regretted not at least giving it a try. Best of luck to you!</p>

<p>If you are already at a 35, a 36 won’t increase your chances in anyway. Waste of a $$, waste of a saturday morning, and it can only hurt you in my opinion. You don’t want the admission officer reading your application thinking “This kid got a 35 the first time and willingly retook it?” Already starting off on a bad foot with admissions.</p>

<p>My S2 scored a 36 and it has been a pretty awesome experience for him and his high school.</p>

<p>Some people might see this as more of an ego thing and maybe it is… but it has really benefited him in the areas of merit scholarships, freshman research grants and being singled out for a freshman engineering internship with a F100 company.</p>

<p>Some schools offer certain scholarships for a 36 - I would research the schools you are interested in and see if this matters.</p>

<p>Any school that will reject you for a 35 will reject you if you had a 36 – i.e. other factors that don’t make them want you.</p>

<p>Don’t retake it if you have better things to do for that few hours. But, you are likely to waste many a few hours in the next 6 months, so retake it and make it a 144. Statistics doesn’t apply at this level.</p>

<p>Thanks for all the responses! It seems like I’m getting a lot of varying opinions, so I thought I would post my resume so that you can evaluate my score in the context of my application. Again, I’d really appreciate any feedback, it’ll be up shortly.</p>

<p>If you constantly get 36’s on practice tests, go for it.</p>

<p>If you overperformed and got a 35, obviously don’t take it again.</p>

<p>NO!!! DO NOT!! Even with a 35, you are still in the 99th percentile.</p>

<p>With those EC, stats and first generation, and being white. There is no reason why you shouldn’t get into ANY college in the United States.</p>

<p>Ngtexas - I forgot to tell you that even though my son received a 36 and had other great stats, he was still rejected by MIT. It was a humbling experience. </p>

<p>But…he still loves his Minnesota Twins jersey with his last name and a 36 on the back from the day the 22 recipients from Minn were honored at a Twins game out on the ball field.</p>

<p>FYI last year there were 700 36’s and 4200 35’s , the year before it was 580 and 3900</p>

<p>Just like SeaHawks506 said, if you retake the ACT with a score of 35, it’s pretty risky. There’s a decent change your score will drop to maybe 33 or 34, maybe stay at 35. If you manage to pull a 36, colleges will think that you really really want high scores amid everything else. </p>

<p>Bottom line: I wouldn’t retake it.</p>

<p>However, IMO – you shouldn’t consider taking the test again unless you’re going to do the prep again. The time spent doing the prep could more profitably be spent hanging at the mall, at the beach, on facebook or whatever you do for fun.</p>

<p>You guys are making me paranoid now. My son that scored a 33 his sophmore year is taking his ACT again this year trying to get a higher grade. It can actually drag it down really??? We paid for the upcoming tests this June. Should I be worried? I assumed it would be better since he had another year of math and science and AP English this year. Hope I didn’t make the wrong decision. But he got the 33 with almost no studying. So I guess I’ll have to crack the whip on studying this time. But he’s so occupied with three AP tests, 3 SATII he just took last Saturday, and a second try at the SAT (only test he scored lower 2080 combined). Did I make a really bad choice?</p>

<p>^calm down. There was an asian kid in my school 2 years ago who retook the ACT anywhere from 7-12 times (I’m not sure what the limit is but he took it every chance he got) and was still admitted to Cornell. </p>

<p>The vast vast majority of schools don’t ask for all of your scores.</p>

<p>Santookie, I think you’re describing a whole different case. If I had a kid who’d scored 33 as a sophomore, I’d have him take another crack at ACT too. There is reason to think he might do better. In addition, while 33 is a very good score, it can be improved upon. But IMO, if you score 35 as a junior, going back in order to try for 36 is just gilding the lily.</p>

<p>HiimCole and Sikorsky - thanks I feel better. He came back from the SATII and said only one or two questions stumped him. He actually memorized the questions and wrote them down when he got to the car. He wanted to ask his teachers to explain how to solve them the following Monday. I think he’s weird that its concerns him like that.</p>
