Hey guys!
I took the SAT for the first time in October and got a 1390. I retook it on March 24th (makeup test date cause of storm) and just got my score back. This time I got a 1500! I am shooting for the following schools: Georgia Institute of Technology, Boston University, and the University of Michigan. However I also have schools like Georgetown and Stanford on my list, so I was wondering if I should retake the SAT? How much of a difference is there in admissions between a 1500 and like a 1520? I’m worried I will get a lower score if I take it again. Any advice would be appreciated.
Congratulations on the 1500. I would maybe do a practice test or two at home under timed conditions. If your results are similar or lower to the 1500, I wouldn’t retake. If you consistently score 1550+, in practice then maybe try a third time.
Yeah, I think I’m going to do this over the summer! If I get 1550+ I could re-take in August
Also again congrats on your great score!! Don’t take the SAT again and getting a slighly higher score won’t change your chances. Try to focus on your grades and extracurriculars (awards, leadership, internships, clubs, sports, research) because those will make a difference!
Congrats. 1500 is a great score and is above admission average, but well within mid 50, at UMich. You should look closer at the section scores and your intended major. Higher scores are helpful for all the schools on your list. For schools that do superscoring, while UMich doesnt, you may see a bigger improvement in composite score.
For Stanford, they really search for passion. Not saying anything about my school, but NO ONE has ever gotten into Stanford, but we have at least 35 students who get into Ivies. They have more than enough people with perfect scores to fill their class. I would only retake the SAT, as others said, if you are sure you can get a 1550+. Getting a 1510 or 1520 over a 1500 is not going to change the game.
Congrats on the 1500
Were your subscores relatively even, e.g. 750/750 or were they more lopsided, e.g. 800/700. The more lopsided they are, the better the chance that you can improve, especially on a superscoring basis.
I got a 760 reading, and a 740 math
aint gonna matter at this point focus on other things - plenty of people rejected with 1600 as well as many accepted under 1500 so the score is irrelevant at this point
^ Not really. People get admitted at a wide change of test scores at any school while full score may still get rejected, it does not mean score does not matter at all. The chances will still increase with test score, the difference may be small when compare to the effort needed,
three times though when you got a 1500 will raise red flags that the applicant is too test focused. Selective colleges don’t want to admit people who they think will go to class then back to dorm or library than back to class. And if you get a 1600 now, you’re going to be compared against people that got 1600 on their first try. I wouldn’t take it with that balanced score.
^ Only for schools that want all score may see the other test record. For schools that accept score choice, they would not care.
Try ACT, take practice test and see how you score. If you haven’t taken Subject SAT then focus on that, a 800 of math 2 subject test could make a difference.
Tough call, but there may be more downside than upside with the 1390 score. If you score less than 1500 next time, schools that receive all scores may think the 1500 was a fluke. Focus on the SAT2’s for now.
Yeah that is my major concern
I have taken world history and math 2 (730 and 710). I’m planning on taking bio M and US History in May and June respectively because I take AP’s in both of those two subjects so I’m hoping for 750+ on them.
