I took the SATI in November and got a 2260.

780M, 750 CR, and 730 Writing.

Is this score good enough to apply to the top schools in the nation? If I retook it and received....say, a 2300+, would that improve my chances at the Ivies, or would they just not care, since my original score is decent enough anyway.

If I did get a score close to 2400, would it make up for other weaknesses in my application?

Or should I just stop obsessing over it and focus on my ACT, SATIIs, and GPA?

Check out some of the ED results boards on the Ivies. What I've gathered from them is that unless you have a 2350-2400 (depending on the school), what gets you in is the subjective. I saw a 2370 deferred from Brown, a 2330 from Columbia, and a 2400 from Yale (all with 4.0 UW GPA's, 750+ SAT II's, etc.)

i do not think you should obsess as your sat scores are great... if you are retaking it, then are you planning to take it on jan? isnt that a bit late for jan1st deadlines? i second silverturtle..

see that's what i don't get. harvard's deadline is jan 1. they even said they begin reading apps dec 1, but they told me i can take the jan 26th SAT. how is that score that comes around feb used in admissions decision. isn't the decision already made?

i would only say retake if you are absolutely confident that you can improve your score.
a 2260 is a fabulous score regardless so i think you need to look at your gpa, extracurriculurs, etc to see which you should focus on. if your gpa is a little low then i think you should focus on using your second semester of junior year on getting good grades. and if you think you are slacking on ECs, then maybe you should try to further yourself in something you're already involved in (with leadership positions or organizations).
also, look at your sat ii scores - you will need two for most schools but three for harvard. if you need to take a few of those (or those a need a more significant amount of improvement), then study for those instead of retaking an already strong sat i score.

You have nothing to lose by retaking except a Saturday morning. Schools will superscore anyway. Don't obsess about it and you probably don't need to prep either besides a practice test or two. Like musicgal3 says concentrate on other things to round your application.

I guess I won't worry too much about it for the moment. Seeing as how I'll be studying for the SATII Math 2 and Lit exams anyway, I'll just see how those go. If I do extremely well on those, I'll try the Reasoning test again.

Thanks for all the advice! I guess I saw all the 2300+ scores around here and got a bit too nervous.

Many people who go to these great colleges have scores similar to yours, as in the avg/median score. I don't imagine a college looking down upon you with that score, they just want to make sure that people don't have a score not suitable to their college like below a 700. They would not turn down a worthy candidate even if he or she didn't have a great SAT score if they saw things on the applicant/resume that stood out over others.

Retaking may be slightly problematic. I've SATII's in both May and June, ACTs in April, and I'd like to see how I do on those. I've heard nothing good about October test dates, especially as they don't seem to be offered within Ann Arbor. November may be a little late?
